The Braille Piano Method - Lesson One 🎹 ~Melody~

"It takes the black keys and the white keys both, to make perfect harmony."
- Benny Goodman -

I recently related how I learned to play the piano:

The Braille Piano Method - Playing On The Black Keys 🎹

Though I consider myself a "music hacker," I might be able to give you "a leg up" if you've always wanted to learn a little bit about how it's done.

But a word to the wise...

You may not want to share this with your favorite music teacher; she'd probably be mortified.

On the other hand, if you like shortcuts and "quick and easy" hacks, this could but just what you've been looking for!

The Braille Piano Method - Lesson One

If you start with a goal, I think you'll pick up the piano very quickly. Our first lesson will be learning to play the traditional melody for the hymn, "Amazing Grace."

Let's get started!

Below is an illustration of "enough" of the keyboard for our purposes.

Notice that each note in the F# (F-sharp) scale is assigned a number. If you start with Note 1 in the middle section labeled Octave Y, and play each numbered key, you will hear the traditional "Do-Re-Mi etc." scale.

For notes in the octaves above and below the "middle" of the illustration, I will use the letter 'Z' or 'X' to distinguish them from the notes in the middle.

The lists of notes do not contain any timing indicators. Just use your memory of the melody to get the timing right. This is called "playing by ear," because you've heard it all before. You already know how the song goes, after hearing it so many times.

F#Scales.png

Here's the sequence:

X5-1-3-1-3 "Amazing grace,"
2-1-X6-X5 "how sweet the sound"
X5-1-3-1-3-2-3-5 "that saved a wretch like me."
3-5-3-5-3-1 "I once was lost,"
X5-X6-1-1-X6-X5 "but now I'm found,"
X5-1-3-1-3-2-1 "was blind, but now I see."

If you play this list of notes in sequence, all on the black keys, you'll produce the melody of "Amazing Grace."

Notice that each "octave" contains seven notes.

The "octave," or eighth note, is actually a repeat of the first note in the scale.

Here once again is a YouTube of the song:

You can more or less copy what you see in the video.

In coming lessons,

we'll learn how to add chords and a base-line to the song. For the moment, just concentrate on learning how to play the tune. Practice until you can make the melody sound like your memory of how it ought to sound.

Have fun!

Nice write up, your a great piano instructor, you know. Keep it coming

Thanks! Stay "tuned." ;)

Your welcome

I post a hack on how to treat a papercut and you post a hack on HOW TO PLAY THE PIANO! Yep, that sounds about right. You are way more sophisticated than I am. Haha. Great post!

my mom used to sneak vegetables into my food...I'll bet you were like that with your kids ha ha
Like the song choice and the piano tips :)

Seemed obvious to me... A widely known classic! ;)

i remember when i @ primary school learned this :) good times ,thank you for bringing them back to me , peace

You're welcome!

Thanks for sharing your good memories... :)

Seems like my fingers are growing from a different place,so can't play at all :)
But thanks for helping others, thumbs up!!!

Thank you - but, don't give up too easily... You might surprise yourself if you give it a shot! ;)

I don't think so...We all here for doing right things, right?
So if the snake does not have a wings it can't fly, right?

So we all doing what we can do best!!!
Have a great day, anyways :)

Hahahaha... Snakes may not have wings, but they can climb trees:

A Snake In A Tree? Seriously?

the melody is awesome , keep it up!

OH MY GOD - I could actually hear the music of Amazing Grace playing in my head as I was following along with your keyboard diagram and key sequences!

You've just done what every music teacher of mine had failed to do - teach me how to understand musical notes enough to play an actual song! Now that's the power of a talented teacher ;)

I will definitely try this out with my own keyboard in the morning (not while my family is still asleep) and I greatly look forward to my next piano lesson - thanks Professor @creatr!

I'm so glad to sense your excitement! :D

This is definitely going to be fun... Be sure to let me know if you have questions? ;)

Will do, thanks @creatr. Very excited and pumped up!

I now want a keyboard to play on, I've never been good with musical instruments, wish I had tried harder at school

If you just want to "get your toe wet," you can probably find a very reasonably priced electronic portable keyboard at a rummage sale. I'd suggest, if possible, one with full-sized keys, but it doesn't have to have a "full set" of 88 like a piano. You really don't need too many more than the illustration in this lesson! ;)

My mum in law plays the organ. Might have to have a go on hers lol will have to supply ear plugs first though lol :)

I have been told there is a connection of the music world to the mathematical world. As notes are fractioned off into values of time and notes are sometime given numbers to teach beginners, I get it. It haunts me to hear the great hymn Amazing Grace. I was asked to play for my sweethearts funeral Dec 12 and that was one of three songs I played. Tomorrow I go to pay a visit to her mother. It is perhaps God working to hear this song tonight. Thanks for the spiritual and musical experience. - Troy

!!! :O !!!

I am so very sorry for your loss... );

Thanks for this moment. Sometimes the tears of gratitude come pouring. I appreciate you tonight.

You actually started pronto! I'm so excited for when this all comes in full circle. Do you have a list of songs you intend to cover?

I'll have a few, but will also take suggestions from my interested students, if they turn out to be suitable.

If you have any ideas (think "simple" and "traditional") please do let me know? ;)

So, I was too excited I couldn't think of a suggestion. Not sure about traditional but simple like... Don't cry for me Argentina?

(Off-topic: Are those quail eggs inside the plastic beside the yellow tumbler? o.o sorry lol)

I have no idea about the eggs? I did not make that video. ;)

"Don't Cry For Me Argentina" is probably not suitable... But keep thinking! ;)

Ah. Just the coloring and stuff. Anyway! I'll have to keep thinking as I follow through your lessons. More power to you!
