Rediscovering Music - Part Two

in #music6 years ago (edited)

Is it the Lyric or Video that makes a Song?

music-2043428_960_720.jpg

I remember the days of MTV when they actually played music videos. Do they anymore? A conversation piece back then was Michael Jackson’s Black or White video. I remember the video playing on TV and even my parents would comment on the video when they didn’t completely understand the meaning behind the song (English isn’t their first language).

So here is a question! Is it the lyric that makes a song or does the video accompanying the words have a factor on how we perceive a song?

As mentioned in my first song post, I’m rediscovering music again. I’ve come across some new musicians and rediscovering old ones. I have discovered some of the songs I’m listening to have some awesome videos that enhances the feel of the music.

Here are several examples. If you notice, many of the songs are by male musicians. I can’t help it if my preference tends to swing to the male voices out there.

So again, here is my music list as of today! Some new and some old ones thrown in. It may change tomorrow or the next day, but I will enjoy these songs and the accompanying videos today.

NOTE: Any music lovers out there interested in sharing your love of music, @magicalmoonlight is currently hosting a Music Heals The Soul contest. Go check it out and perhaps you will discover a new artist or two to add to your playlist.

X Ambassadors – Unsteady

I met some beautiful spirits on here and only recently learned that many have dealt with some form of addiction in their lives. I can never say I understand the personal angst of addiction since I never experienced addiction myself. Well, if you exclude my Dunkin Donut cup of coffee that I have to have daily as an addiction, because I do go out on snowstorm days to grab one. My life is pretty much on the straight and narrow. That doesn’t mean I don’t see the destruction of addiction on the lives of family and friends. I’ve witnessed it.

This song makes me think of the pain and angst of addiction, any form of addiction.

Hold
Hold on
Hold on to me
'Cause I'm a little unsteady
A little unsteady

OneRepublic - Let's Hurt Tonight

OneRepublic. I love so many of their songs so it’s hard to not include at least one of their songs on this list. Here is another example of how both the lyric and video are used to magnify the meaning of the song.

So I'll hit the lights and you lock the doors
We ain't leaving this room 'til we bust the mold
Don't walk away, don't roll your eyes
They say love is pain, well darling, let's hurt tonight

Scotty McCreery - Five More Minutes

I enjoy listening to modern country songs and not so much the ones with the country twang. I like this song and video by Scotty McCreery. I don't see myself listening to it much, but might come around to it now and then.

What would we do if we have five more minutes of that special moment in time?

Time rolls by the clock don't stop
I wish I had a few more drops
Of the good stuff, the good times
Oh but they just keep on flying
Right on by like it ain't nothing
Wish I had me a pause button
Moments like those Lord knows I'd hit it
And give myself five more minutes

Bebe Rexha - Meant to Be (feat. Florida Georgia Line)

Here is some eye candy for all the guys out there. I only listen to this song now and then, but I know many guys out there can appreciate the sexiness in the video. Soo..sex sells then?

Who knows where this road is supposed to lead
We got nothing but time
As long as you're right here next to me, everything's gonna be alright
If it's meant to be, it'll be, it'll be
Baby, just let it be

Creed - One Last Breath

I’m taking you back once again with Creed. Another old favorite that once reigned on my CD tracks. The song is on the verge of morbid, sad, and can romantic be aptly used to describe it? Question on the romantic descriptor since I don’t really understand the meaning of this song. It can be interpreted in different ways, perhaps dependent on someone’s state of mind when listening to the song.

Please come now I think I'm falling
I'm holding on to all I think is safe
It seems I found the road to nowhere
And I'm trying to escape
I yelled back when I heard thunder
But I'm down to one last breath
And with it let me say, let me say
Hold me now
I'm six feet from the edge and I'm thinking
Maybe six feet ain't so far down

Dan + Shay - Tequila

You would think that with a title named Tequila, the song will be pure country. I was surprised to see the song is not really about Tequila.

I can still shut down a party
I can hang with anybody
I can drink whiskey and red wine
Champagne all night
Little Scotch on the rocks and I'm fine, I'm fine
But when I taste tequila, baby I still see ya
Cutting up the floor in a sorority t-shirt

Thank you for stopping by! Have a BEE-ATIFIC day!

I love your choice in music :) Unsteady is a super great song and can really be a song that one who is addict or has been, can relate with.

This post would be perfect for my contest if you wanted to join! Music Heals The Soul

Hey! :) I heard the song Unsteady on the radio first, then came to check out the video. I think it adds to the impact of the song. I love that there are songs that speaks to the soul. It helps knowing that one can relate to the meaning of a song, and that a person is not truly alone.

I thought I saw something on gina about music. Was planning on scrolling through it to find out what. Your post must be it! Will stop by now. :)

I think it adds to the song as well. As long as the video is well thought out and goes with the song, some don't but majority of the time it helps to really relate when you watch the video. That is so true, it does help people a lot to know that they are not alone.

I love it when a video tells a story but the lyric will always be my first love. I hear the words above all else.

Oh that One Republic song... mmmm... amazing.
Thank you for sharing. I havent heard that one. It hits me right in the feels.

I've listened to so many OneRepublic song, and just found this one out myself. They are just a talented group, I love almost all their song. I don't really do concerts but I will have to go to one of theirs.

Great question! Omg remember when mtv was ONLY music videos?!? I do! I don’t even watch it anymore.

As for if it’s the lyrics or video? For me it’s neither. It’s the BEATS! The sound 💓. It’s what moves me to dance or to cry. It’s rare for me to listen to music with lyrics these days. I find them to be shallow and void of meaning. They get stuck in your head! So if you believe that thoughts become things, which I do, I do not want lyrics running through my most powerful tool, my mind! I love electronic, classical (cello 💓), Jazz... beats with no lyrics.

I’m traveling today, so I can’t listen to your links. I’ll have to take some time soon. I make it sound like I never listen to pop music, I do. Just rare.

I remember when I was a teen I knew every band, every member, every album... now I’m lucky to recall what I had for dinner last night! 😛

I think MTV stopped playing music videos some times back. Lol, what's the point of having the MTV name?!

Ah, you are a beats person...classical and jazz. I did forget that one oh so important factor of music. Probably because I am tone deaf. I can't carry a tune or move along with the beat. I can listen to alternative or trance music for the beat aspect, but only if it has a nice vocal to it too.

Same as you, I used to know all about music back in the days. I was a member of the BMG CD club when CDs were ridiculously overpriced at $25! I had quite a collection. I listen to the radio through the years, but stopped really listening to music. Just realized now that I miss it.

I like my first list more if you want to take a look at a couple artists. I am loving the first two singers, Calum and Ed Sheeran. Simply soothing.

Hope you are having fun traveling! Be safe and enjoy these special moments with your family.

Music that appeals to me depends on lyrics, melody, beat, genre, video, etc. Video gives the most influence I think because it entices both your audio and visual perception and probably other senses? :D One of the MTV that had a strong impact is Take Me To Church by Hozier. It's very timely for this age and time. The black and white tone of the video added more to the mood of the song.

Lol on the other senses. ;) In today's social media age, having both audio and visual visibility is now a must. Look at the payout values in DTube. All the SP support are going there, more so than to the authors with the beautiful visual talent of writing, but no video attraction.

I've heard of Take Me to Church by Hozier, but haven't checked out their video. Will find time to check it out. Hope you have a beautiful weekend!

Indeed. I have to venture out to DTube and see how I can utilize that to my advantage.

Time lapse videos on DTube are pretty awesome. I don't know how those work and how much time are involved though. Look at this one..wow. The guy is not even on steemit anymore but I can't get myself to remove him from my following list. It's gorgeous.

https://steemit.com/grand/@cinemaninja/grand-canyon-a-4k-time-lapse-film-ninja-cut

I did try some timelapses before just to test the theory and how it was done. I practiced that on our night-flowering cereus. Basically, set your camera to take shots at certain intervals and for how long and then make a video. The photo of the galaxy is what I haven't tried. I wanted to take photos with my friend to was able to do it so he can teach me but then my camera died before I could ask him to.

I’ll see about learning time lapse once I learn basic photography skills. That sucks about your camera. You could have awed me with more of ur photography coolness. Yeah the galaxy timelapse is cool!

I have to work with what I have for now which is a dying Canon EOS 350D haha! I tried asking around if there are accessories I can borrow but sadly no luck so I am stuck with this. There are errors always which is frustration and I cannot make the autofocus work so I have to do it manually which is a trial and error in taking photos.

Nice choices @beeyou!

Even when MTV was big, I always tried NOT to watch them because it ruined what the song organically had already created in my head. After I see a video, that's the only thing I visualize whenever I hear the song, and I find that my brain is often a lot more creative :) I feel the same way about reading a book and then watching the movie or vice versa. It just kind of ruins the personal experience for me. I think that's probably a bit of a rarity, especially during the MTV craze that is.

I'm glad you are rediscovering music; I couldn't live without it. We haven't had tv for over a year now, although we will sometimes watch Netflix, but being tv-less, I have music playing all the time and absolutely love it! :)

Oh I hate it when a video ruins a song for me @lynncoyle1. So I know what you mean with having your perception altered by not having the right visual to accompany the words. The mind is definitely more creative!

I really don't know when I stopped listening to music. I used to love music, but then I started listening to audiobooks since I also love reading. I just never have time to sit with a good book in hand, so I listen to the audiobook version at work. Lately, I started listening to music again and feel that I've missed out on so much. Some songs are simply beautiful and just soothing. It really does speak to the soul.

As for TV, yeah, that can be ruled out. The only thing playing on my TV are kid shows. I know just about every alphabet and children song and every popular kid out in the YouTube world. No time for adult movies, although I make time for Game of Thrones. That is one show I won't miss.

Be thankful that your kids weren't born during the Barney the Dinosaur era! I still get hives thinking about it haha

Brian and I love Game of Thrones, but we don't have tv here, so I have definitely been missing it. I refuse to pay for online HBO just for that though. Aw well, first world problems...

There are so many studies that show the power of music; I wish everyone had music playing instead of dumb ol' tv's in their houses all the time :)

Lol, I actually tried putting a Barney show for him. I guess it's not cool enough for kids of this generation. He prefers his regular ones.

Oh NOOOO...no GOTs?? That is probably the worse, hehe. I actually like the book a lot more but he stopped writing it completely. The show went far beyond the story line in the book, what a shame too. It is an interesting story line but you get more from the experience with the book.

I'm actually enjoying music again a lot. Realizing that a lot of songs I once loved are no longer as impactful. Funny how life changes your perception. I mean the song is still there, encapsulated in time melody and all, but how it affects us changes as we change too.

It's so true how a song at one point in your life can mean so much and then later, meh, not so much ;)

pretty interesting thought. I tend to look at the melody and lyrics and imagine it with my minds eye and then look at the music video.

More often it is different from what I imagine but then it could be different for each person on how the music touched their soul.

Music does touch the soul in different ways. I can listen to trance and alternative and still feel touched when I hear the words. Also depends on the state of mind at the time of listening to the music too.

Some music videos capture the moment beautifully, others..not so much. I only started watching the videos. I love the words above all else.

I'm surprised you don't have an image for me this time around. ;)

Indeed it is a balm when the world is confusing and all you can do is listen to it and let it wash all over you.

Easily rectified @beeyou hahaha here double the fun haha

Where is the eyeball rolling emoji? Appreciate the fun @maverickinvictus. :)

very cool post @beeyou ! I'm more of a lyrics person but sometimes a video really can make a song. - Like the song Happy by Pharrel from the Despicable Me movie- my kids loved it when it came out but I couldn't stand it .. then one day I put the video on youtube for my son and I watched it and was hooked LOL
I love that Unsteady song, too. Gonna listen to the others as soon as I have a free moment!
Awesome post my dear! :)

I am a lyrics person too @amariespeaks. NO..I cannot stand Happy for some reason. Just something about that song, lol.

I first heard of unsteady on the radio, but in this one case, I think the video makes the song. You can not only hear the emotions but see the turmoil as well. It is a really good video.

oh i hadn't seen the video until now. very sad.. :( I hope the others aren't as sad lol gonna be crying by the end ;-)

Video is sad. No, the others are not sad. You can skip the chick one, that's more eye candy for the boys. Tequila is actually a cool video, surprising.

LOL you kill me eye candy for the boys haha I did like tequila the song and the video! and I usually don't like country ! nice choices @beeyou :)

Here is some eye candy for us girls. :) It's country too, but come on, are we even listening to the words with that beautiful specimen in front of us? ;)

lol I don't know.. I can't get passed those caterpillar eye brows ;-) hahah jk I think I have heard this song before though... I like it! thanks for sharing it

Lol, caterpillar eyebrows! It's those dreamy blue eyes for me. ;)
