Travels With Connie #12 Bittersweet Trip
Sometimes I know exactly where I am going. In that case it’s easy, pick a route and go.
More often I have an idea where I’d like to end up, and generally speaking a direction to go.
Once in a while I just follow the front wheel and see where it takes me.
Mexican Hat, Utah.
This is where we are ultimately headed, but I'm having trouble getting started. Just exactly like I did starting this trip.
There's a reason for that 'hesitation'. Part of this ride is a memorial to a guy named Terry Hammond (ACL). He was a huge part of the Long Rider community and he left us way too soon. It wasn't even a motorcycle crash, it was a stupid old heart attack.
My friend Bob Smith and I are going from Yuma to Kingman, AZ to meet George (of secret spot fame) and Uncle Larry. We'll pick up one more guy that I don't even know at Mesquite, NV. A group of 5 which is an enormous pack for me.
Oatman, AZ
Bob and I are always on time or early, and we had plenty of time to take the old Route 66 part of the way, including Oatman, AZ. Named for a fairly famous family that was killed by hostile Indians in 1851. Two girls survived and one of them lived to be reunited with white society.
The Classy Ass
Why on earth would you name your store the Classy Ass? Because Oatman is best known for a large herd of burros that inhabit the town. They are incredible pests, clamoring to be fed, because you can buy small bags of carrots in almost every business in town.

We've finished our short stop in Oatman, we can take Route 66 right to Kingman and we'll be there in time for lunch. I'll pick the ride up in Kingman or somewhere north of that in tomorrow's post.
