Monomad: Friday Flowers ~ Errr... excuse me, is that a flower?

in #monomad7 years ago (edited)

Introducing the banana flower! Or what the Malays here call 'Jantung Pisang' or Heart of the Banana.

The banana flower is edible, often cooked in some local dishes with coconut milk, in curries or eaten raw as part of 'ulam' or traditional Malay salads.

The outer old tough layers are peeled off and discarded, while the soft insides are often sliced thin before cooking. The outer layers, called bracts, may be seen these days being used aesthetically as a dish/holder for accompaniments to main dishes.

I actually spotted this while at my neighbourhood 'mamak' for tea time! Right next to the satay (sate) stall... This little banana tree grows wild and I have often seen fruits on it.
This was the first flower - a huge one at that - with a luxurious colour, that I've seen growing there!
For the uninitiated, the banana fruits will grow out of the top of it...
Sometimes, you may see both the fruits and this heart of the banana, together on the tree at the same time
Hmmm, I must go back to see if the bananas have sprouted out of it yet!

I'm with QURATOR... Are you?

We call it “puso” meaning heart also. ☺️☺️

See.... how similar languages are... :)
Thank you, @appleskie!

its an antique flower and look like corn.

Yes, it does look like corn... Purple corn! :D

Didn't know bananas have flowers! The ones I see growing in the supermarkets here definitely don't...

Hope you are well!

Hehehe... Yup, not many people do... Not often seen. Definitely not in the supermarkets where you live; we do have them here though... ;) How are you, my friend? Yes, pretty good here... Gonna drop by your page after this and see if you're on another trip! ;)

Wonderful picture! Stunning edit. Where I am originally from (not too far from you in terms of your mentioned location) we call it 'mocha'. It is a culinary delicacy if cooked right.

Hey hey Mrs DoorsWindowsStairs Ackhoo ツ
long time no see. Good bananacolorsplash that is! Good to see you and your photos are still alive and well. This seems to be the new place to be for most of the active tsuvians right now. Finally posted my introduction here and already met some tsuvians a few days ago and now i think i gotta get some CeilingsToWatch shots out on the blockchain then!

That is awesome.
