The Lanky Crane Flies
These long legged insects are flies of the family Tipulidae, which are generally called Crane Flies. Quite a few have been hanging around my moth light lately. If there are any dipterists out there who can tell what species these are then please let me know.
The photos were taken with a Canon 7D and Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro lens.

An old "folk" name in our area for these is a Gally-Napper. Others call them Mosquito Hawks. I've never heard the name Crane Fly. Isn't that funny? :)
When I lived in Scotland they were called Daddy Long Legs but here that name is give to a spider.
We also have a spider called a Daddy Long Legs!
Those are some crazy looking critters!
That reminds me of working in Switzerland with 2 Malaysian guys, when they saw daddy long legs looked like giant mozzys, I told them they are poisonous (they are but cant bite lol) They spent the whole summer running away from daddy long legs lol I did tell them eventually lol that was before google.....
