A Hawk Moth on My Hand
This wonderful little creature is the Coprosma Hawk Moth, Hippotion scrofa. It visited my moth light a couple of nights ago and happily walked onto my fingers, allowing me to take a few shots. After that it started vibrating it's wings, warming up the flight muscles. As it flew off into the night, it's wing made a beautiful deep buzzing sound.
Look closely and you'll see my fingers are covered in shed moth scales.
The photos were taken with a Canon 7D and Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro lens.

Very beautiful creature! I always liked hawk moths; we used to have a couple of species where I grew up in Denmark. Great photos!
In Denmark you probably have the same species that I used to see when I lived in Scotland.
it is the first time I have had someone gjve me a moth dust covered finger. 😄
beautiful moth
Wow! That's great! What kind of set up do you use for the moth light?
You can see a photo of my moth trap here:

Note: It does no harm to the moths.
Wow, that was a fantastically informative post! I hope to remember that to try it out in the spring!
Thanks. Hope you get a chance to try some mothing. It's a fascinating hobby.

Nice macro!
So, I have an irrational fear of moths and your photos are amazing but, I am screaming on the inside. You obviously lived through the experience of this creature landing on you and shedding its scales but, OML, I would have freaked out. I hope to never hear its "beautiful" deep buzzing sound! I upvoted and resteemed your post in hopes that It will put me on the way to being less ridiculous about my reactions to moths but, I will admit, I did not "click to see a larger image." ;)
Ok, ok. This is very pretty with those white stripes on the head. I still wouldn't touch it though.
