hurricane mama
L treated to me a night at Disney Hall to watch the enigmatic organist Cameron Carpenter perform. The organ, affectionately known as Hurricane Mama, enjoyed rockstar status. I've seen photos of the organist sporting a mohawk. He had a fascinating air about himself. Cameron Carpenter stunned the audience with his playing. He was nice to look at as well. It was like watching a storm. I wondered if Bach inspired his audience in the same manner. I would've stood up with a lighter and say rock on but it wasn't that kind of audience.
L loved his playing and had never seen an organist perform. She said watching him play was like watching a flamenco dancer. She liked his footwork.
Roderick Cox debuted his conducting chops. He was lovely to watch. He moved fluidly and gracefully. Conducting the world premiere of "The Insects Became Magnetic" by Christopher Cerrone. It was mysterious piece. The orchestra brought a diverse panel of sound and music that had me panning the stage wondering who's making that sound??? And how???? It was a wow night on many levels. Here's a snippet of Cox's conducting.
The evening ended earlier than other concerts. It was part of a series with pre-concert and post-concert activities. The later part of the night was a beer tasting of IPAs exclusive to the LA Phil. A DJ played music and the beer flowed generously. L and I played catch up and planned to enjoy a future concert.
It was a fun and spontaneous Friday night. I woke up thinking I was going to tuck myself in for the weekend once my teaching day ended. Instead, I had a gorgeous night at Walt Disney Concert Hall. Here's one last video of Cameron Carpenter.
