THE SÉ - Lisbon's Beautiful Cathedral - Quasimodo For One Day

in #lisbon6 years ago

It's no the Notre Dame but you can easily imagine Quasimodo ringing the bells of the SÉ cathedral of Lisbon as well. Below you can read some excerpts about this beautiful Cathedral from our Lisbon Travel Blog.

The oldest and most important church in Lisbon is its cathedral, the Santa Maria Maior. The Sé, as it’s commonly referred to, was built in 1147, immediately after the city was conquered by the Christians. We checked it out after having visited the National Pantheon in the nearby church of Santa Engrácia.

Friends had warned us that the Cathedral wasn’t very impressive, despite its age and history. And upon entering, we decided that they were probably right. The church is dark, and doesn’t pack the same punch as the Engrácia or the São Roque, for example. But the more time we spent inside, allowing our eyes to adjust to the light filtering in through the rose glass window, the more we found to appreciate.

Also, it’s safe to assume that, if you leave the Sé unimpressed, it’s because you skipped the ambulatory, cloister and treasury. This is understandable; these sections cost €4, and if you weren’t bowled over by the church itself, why would you pay extra? But they turn a mediocre experience into something memorable.

The cloister is 50% archaeological site, 50% collection of abandoned chapels, and !00% atmospheric. The archaeological dig in the center of the cloister looks as though it’s been going on forever, and is covered by an opaque ceiling that casts the yard in a beautifully strange yellow light.

We remember visiting this cathedral and yes, we were in and out within ten minutes (that's because Sam's dad had a moment to himself, otherwise we would be out sooner). We were rushed with lots of things to see in Lisbon in one day rather than properly being interested.
Thanks for the post and for #travelfeed!

We read that there was not too much to see and not really worth it but the cloister was incredible and standing under the giant rose stained glass window ... that took my breath away.

Sam lived in Rome and has been to a few churches/cathedrals in his time, so you can imagine he ends up thinking they are all the same. We know they are not and they have their own unique charm. We're glad you got to be Quasimodo for the day - swinging on some bells, were you? Hehehe

I found the cathedral unattended, not really impressive. But just next to the cathedral has the church of Santo Antonio, well worth a visit.

Did you visit the cloister and the museum ... we thought the same but the cloister was so weird and beautiful, we loved it.

I'm majorly wanderlusting for Lisbon after seeing your amazing posts everyday. That's a beautiful cathedral!

We were surprised to read beforehand that many visitors didn't like it ... we loved it but to see other parts of it you have to pay. Most people don't do that. They walk in and out.

Haha I love that you brought Quasimodo into this. He would totally hang out there.

Your pics are beautiful!! I especially love the bright colors of the glass and the up-close photos with unique angles.

I love that you also put a video in here. I wish my upvote was worth more because you obviously put a lot of time and effort into this! Someday it will be :)

May I ask why you put the video on youtube instead of dtube? Do you also use dtube?

Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment. Any upvote makes us feel great, it's not about the money but the fact that someone actually took the time to read our posts.

Well, the problem with @dtube .. for one I have trouble uploading, they take a 25% cut and after the 7 day cut off I won't be able to earn anything on them. And with videos it takes at least one week before it gains momentum.

"it's not about the money but the fact that someone actually took the time to read our posts." YES that's exactly how I feel!! Haha idk why it feels so good but youre right.

Whoa, okay that's all interesting stuff to know!! Thanks!

I like it that you share your experiences with us - even when you aren't blowed away from this church... Thank you for this...

And some words to the cheetah: I link you can be glad, that I the URL is the same name as you use in Saeemit.. I think it's really annoying but not too bad.

Thank you so much !!! I hope others see that too!!!! And in general the Steemit community encourages you to re-publish your content. They even have a Wordpress Plugin for that .. ehheh

You're right outside it looks like notre dame in Paris but inside is different and with also an attractive architecture
