Things that you should do at age of 20 so that you won’t regret at age of 40

in #life7 years ago

20 years old is not the transition period of adulthood, not the extension of youth, nor is it the preparatory of entering society, but is the key period of adult development.

a Few days ago, I saw an article that gives me a lot of thought.

Because this article describes the status of many contemporary young people, which make I am one of them:

I always feeling passionate after graduated, if I can find a good job, the company will give me self-confidence, so especially when others ask me where I work, I will feel very good.

However, after several years working in the same company, the main thing that I learned is only Excel skills, power point slide, and more than 100 kinds of English abbreviations ...

Of course, I still can live like this, it’s not too bad, but I do not want live like this, and I also do not know what to do.

Do you have the same confusion? If so, this post is worth reading well.

I've watched a Ted speech from a psychologist, Meg Jay, “why 30 is not the new 20?”

Meg Jay talked about her first experience of having a patient when she was young.

At that time Jay was a student in psychology, A 26-year-old woman, Alex, who looked quite ordinary want talk to her about men.

Jay felt that she could handle an ordinary patient, compared with the other students who need to handle an arsonist.

Because there are many young people like this, they are young, energetic, have time, but just a little confused.

At that time, Jay thought that these young people's confusion is not a big deal, and life will move on the right track as we grow older.

So in that consultation, she was just a little more comfortable with the story Alex had described.

Until one day, Jay's supervisor told her that Alex should give a serious consideration of her love life.

"If she is dating with a knucklehead, she will marry to a knucklehead sooner or later. The best time to give her advice is before getting married."

The supervisor's advice made Jay understand that Alex's 20 shouldn't have run aground like this, which is an important lesson for Jay's career:

30 is not the new 20.

Because the 20 something is a period of plasticity. For example, when we were 20 years old, our personality changed much more than other periods, and women's fertility reached the peak at the age of 28.

At the age of 20 something, the human brain undergoes a second development and then tends to stabilize, and people's lives gradually stabilize at 30.

Therefore, the 20 something is not a period to indulge in the enjoyment of the day, but an intense development period. But many people are wasting their time in 20.

souce

If we can not understand this earlier, until the age of thirty or forty, and the gap between peers will become larger and bigger.

Others have already had a hundred thousand as salary, you are still suffering from a three thousand or four thousand of salary. Others have been building their business in their profession, but you still at the bottom of the job working for your boss's dream.

So, what should you do at the age of 20, so that you won’t regret at the age of 30?

First, know yourself and figure out what you want.

Many people muddle through, busy and mediocre, the reason is that they did not think seriously about what they want, so they began to drift.

People say that the movie looks good, you then go to watch;

People say that the government job has really good salary, you then go interview for government job;

People say at the age of 25 should get married and have children, you then hastily find a partner and live your life.

If you can not face the deep desires in your heart, even if you succeed, you will not find the true happiness.

There are two different paths in life.

If you choose the first path, you may eventually get promoted, become a boss, partner, and lead a glamorous life in the eyes of others, but you will feel that your life is becoming less meaningful and less fulfilling.

And if you choose the second path, even if you failed, but the work itself is a reward, your life will still be more meaningful.

If you can't find the Dharma in your heart, ask yourself: Who are you in 5 years? Where you will be in 10 years?

Second, play hard in the field you love.

A good life is to play hard in the field you love.

Even a child knows about this, they can always find their favorite areas, work hard, and face the results with a smile.

When you find what you really want, you should do your job in the field that you love.

At this point, we should learn from Japanese craftsmen.

There is a famous pastry chef in Japan, called Yokogawa Hideo.

His dream when he was young was to open a dessert shop, and today, he created a dessert shop that maintains a high level of passenger flow and world-renowned daily.

His dessert does not have a gorgeous appearance, but ingredients and taste will make you want to have more.

For example, his homemade pizza cake, he is very strict on the chocolate used in the cake. The viscosity and freshness of chocolate require constant research and development. To confirm the consistency of the chocolate, he even touched the 100°c of chocolate directly with his hand. It is a solid and time-consuming effort to repeatedly scrape and cool chocolate on the chopping board, which is a kind of small crystallization, which Mr. Hideo insists on doing.

Mr. Hideo’s craftsman spirit is a kind of deep work ability.

Third, walk out from familiar circle, expand your comfort zone

We all like the comfortable feeling, so we always stay in a comfortable position, playing the role of comfort, and stay together with people you familiar with. In short, everything is a familiar thing.

But this "comfort zone" once established, it is easy to become dependent, so as to confine ourselves in the zone, stay in a particular state, slowly bring out the laziness ideology, living in a slacking lifestyle.

When people stay in a comfortable zone for a long time and do not want to use their brains, if you take these people to a more sinister environment, they will become mature when they experience challenges and pains.

In one study, the researchers tested the memory by presenting pictures to subjects who were unfamiliar, familiar, and very familiar.

The results showed that when the researchers showed the subjects unfamiliar pictures, they had the best test results, followed by familiar pictures.

In other words, the involvement of new information is also important, although it helps to remember that repetition continues.

However, out of the comfort zone, not only can improve memory, but also enhance individual expressiveness, stimulate creativity and enhance learning ability.

Because allowing yourself to be in a new and unfamiliar environment can cause specific parts of the brain to release dopamine(a natural chemical that excites people). This "brain stimulant" is only activated when we see or experience something new.

When you get used to the discomfort, your comfort zone will expand, you will become better.

source

So what can be done to expand the comfort zone?

Do something new every day. For example, change a route to work, listen to music that you never listen before.

Learn a new skill. such as learning a new language, learning from the physical activities that have never been learned before.

It takes courage and time to expand your comfort zone, and it's crucial to start slowly and firmly. If you have social anxiety, don't force yourself to talk to the crowd immediately, just a simple hello will help.

If you are around 20 something, perhaps you should understand, 20 something, is not the transition period of adulthood, not the extension of youth, not preparation before entering the society, but is the critical period of adult development.

If you are still in a muddle, you might as well ask yourself in your spare time:

If you live like this, where will you be 10 years from now?

If the answer isn't what you expected, it's time to make a change.

Good advice there, Tony. Some of my mentors gave me the same kind of advice when I was in my early 20s too. Certainly help give me clarity in life.

I seen many in their 30s who are just following the crowd (whatever they perceive the crowd is), without really questioning why they do certain things they do. Which is why they buy a property away from their workplace only to spend 5 hours a day going to and coming back from work.

Or they leave their job to become an Uber driver, so they can soul search. Well, if it has been 6 months, it sure is a lot of soul searching.

Or being in their 30s but still living without a care like they have just graduated.

Man, I think I'm being judgmental ... Time for me to reflect. :(
