Kerala has to rethink the idea of development to avoid another calamity.

On May 29, 491 people died in Kerala by beginning of the monsoon and destroyed homes worth hundreds of crores of rupees.

Heavy rainfall made massive floods in the state last month 10 lakh people were sent to relief camps.

The finance minister Thomas Issac told on September 3rd that Kerala needs Rs.30,000 crores to rebuild.

Many factors cause floods. These seasons were experienced in Kerala during the week ending August 15.

Only two districts, Idukki and Wayanad alone were occured the whole state expected rain.

But that rain was not just the reason.

From the beginning of the monsoon 247 landslides happened in Wayanad district.

Prominent social scientist KT Rammohan about the factors that could have caused the flood, the preventive measures that the state could now take and whether comparisons with the massive floods of 1924 were justified.

What has led to the recent flooding and landslides in Kerala?

The heavy rain is the most obvious cause, but I think that's just the most obvious reason. We must consider the medium and long-term historical factors that have influenced Kerala's ecosystem.
