My Life is So Much Better When I'm NOT Playing Videogames

in #life7 years ago (edited)

Let me make one thing clear. I love video games. LOOOOVE them. When it's done right, the combination of interactive storytelling, puzzles, challenges and entertainment creates one of the most impressive and immersive artistic mediums in the world.

But I love video games a little too much

When I get into a game, that's all I want to do. That's where I'll devote all of my free time. I no longer produce art, I no longer animate, I hardly write... I just game.

Some of the biggest culprits in my tenure as a gamer have been:

  • The Half Life Series
  • Skyrim
  • Cities Skylines
  • The Saints Row Series
  • Timber and Stone
  • Minecraft

I'm sure there are others too.

A friend at work has been talking to me about the game 7 Days to Die. I actually bought it on a Steam sale a few months ago, so it's been sitting in my library collecting dust, so to speak. This game sounds like it could be everything I love: total freedom of choice in a world where one can forage and craft items like in Minecraft, but also fight assailants on a regular basis and come up with creative solutions.

I can feel myself about to be sucked back in...

It's been about two months since I've played anything and I've been so much more productive. When I fall into the time-sink of gaming, I just feel bad about myself. I have fun playing but I can't get past this nagging thought that I've wasted so much time.

I don't know if I'll be giving up gaming permanently, but I'd like to keep this good feeling going for a while. If/when I eventually do return to videogames, I hope I can employ my self-control a little bit more effectively.

Playing games just to let go of fatigue, it will not be a problem.
However, if playing games can forget the obligations, you should leave, and do not do it again.
Because there are responsibilities that you must meet other than playing game.misalnya, your family who need your attention.for you always successful friends.

Stardew Valley, which mashes-up Harvest Moon, Minecraft, and Animal Crossing elements, recently went on sale on Steam, and I scooped it up. Yeah, if you're looking to avoid getting trapped into games which suck your time into a black hole, stay away from that one!

I also enjoy the Saints Row series. Saints Row 2 was a better Grand Theft Auto IV than Grand Theft Auto IV. No mandatory bowling with your cousin…

Are you trying to give me a new addiction?? You're like a drug pusher. Haha!

Totally agree with everything you said about Saints Row.

started steemin' quit plain' games :)

Using a lot of my free time for writing has kept me away from games.

I feel ya buddy, especially that cities skylines mistress hehe sometimes I picture comic book guy from the Simpsons when he looks up from his comic book to see a WMD go off and he says, "I've wasted my life" 😄

Playing video games in moderation is overall a good thing: people work and stress too much, and playing specifically an immersive game helps achieve flow states. But the problem is chasing the zone is a giant time suck and you can't just play 10 minutes here and there. The best way I've found is to carve out a couple 2 hour blocks each week to play something: it helps increase my focus, I think faster, and I'm not driving myself insane by working nonstop. But if it's too addictive, then cutting them out altogether and finding another way to find flow is better for you.

How would you imagine a balance between playing and doing the other stuff you want and have to complete?

I don't know if I could ever find a good balance. The other things I love to do, especially animating, are hugely time consuming. I don't know if there are enough hours in a day for me to keep up all of my hobbies. Something's gotta give. If I have to give up video games forever, I'm fine with it.

Stay away from the games! We're eagerly awaiting your next Steemit instructional animation explaining the blockchain ;-)
