A Letter To Triggered Millennials

in #life5 years ago (edited)

Dear leftist millennials,

We need to talk.

TRIGGER WARNING: Common sense.

I've noticed you're becoming more easily wounded than ever, You've created a fantasy world full of frightening microaggressions by which a single dose of disapproval amounts to racism, sexism, or some kind of phobia.

You're spewing out insults like racist, bigot, fascist, and white supremacist in order to quash an argument rather than counter it, and you're happy to bypass rational discourse in favor of noisy and often violent protests. More to the point, you seem to find everything, literally everything, offensive.

Now, ordinarily, I would be sympathetic to such paranoia. I would suggest you go eat some chocolate, or read a book, or take a nap, however, seeing the adverse effects on free speech this near-Marxist craze has along with the blind nastiness of your advocacy for it, I have only one thing to say.

You suck!

I don't mean this as the racist, sexist, transphobic, ableist, homophobic, microaggressionist you will all instinctively assume it to be. I mean you suck the life out of every debate, discussion, and disagreement. You suck the fun out of every party, comedy spot and costume. You suck the sense out of your own self-confessedly sacred ideology. And the reason you all suck so very, very much is your fondness for my favorite enemy; political correctness.

Political Correctness Is Wrong

Now, don't panic. I know your tendency to freak out when encountering any opinion different to your own and there's no need to run to your safe space. I'm here to help.

I've taken time out of my busy schedule being a pragmatic, sensible, thick-skinned, fabulous citizen to help quell those anxieties, for your sake.

Let's go back to basics and talk about words.

So, You Think Words Have Magic Powers?

Do you remember Harry Potter? While, Harry, Hermione, and all the other lovely witches and wizards could throw flames and stupify people and...

TRIGGER WARNING

...kill enemies with one flick of their wands and a few choice phrases, words don't actually have magic powers. Sadly for all of us, this isn't Hogwarts. Regardless of how hopefully you waited for your letter from Dumbledore, may he rest in peace, you're all Muggles.

a Muggle' (/ˈmʌɡəl/) is a person who lacks any sort of magical ability and was not born in a magical family. Muggles can also be described as people who do not have any magical blood inside them. source

Therefore, presenting words and ideas that may be, just maybe, go against what you've decided is politically incorrect, is not going to cause horrible, excruciating pain.

The thing is, you've got political correctness all wrong. It's not about stopping people from being racist or sexist or homo-trans-or-anything-else-phobic. That's called, "not being a jerk".

Political correctness is the inhibiting of necessary, moral, and practical judgment for fear of defying popular opinion. It prevents us from addressing issues that are important but uncomfortable. In other words, political correctness is sticking your head in the sand and allowing other people to suffer immeasurably because you don't want to be called nasty names like racist or bigot.

Call me crazy, but isn't that contrary to the doctrine of compassion you keep ramming down right wing throats?

Definition of a hypocrite (noun)

: a person who puts on a false veneer of virtue or religion

: a person who acts in contradiction to his or her stated beliefs or feelings

Look, I'm not judging you for this hypocrisy. I actually feel sorry for you. It must be awful living in a perpetual state of worry that some nifty little political correctness ninja is going to jump out from behind the couch and shoot you with silver bullets, but that political correctness ninja never appears.

Because funnily enough, words are not a threat to anyone's physical safety, nor is it sinful to utter words that are different from the latest Buzzfeed article you read. Whether these words appear in the form of ideas you disagree with or phrases like...

  • The pay gap is a myth
  • There are only two genders
  • Conservatism is the new punk

...They're not going to kill you.

In fact, you can actually debate these new ideas and controversial phrases in a friendly, non-hysterical manner.

Now that we've looked at a few examples of why you all suck, we can address the canker-causing pretty much all of your suckery. That is, after years of arguing with you, leftist millennials, I have realized that when you say everyone is entitled to an opinion, you mean only opinions that align with yours.

source

So, when you are confronted with words or opinions that challenge you, you throw a tantrum and run to a safe space until the emotional trauma has subsided. Whether this safe space is a designated room on a university campus or the echo chambers you create for yourselves in the left wing stronghold that is social media, you have quite the knack for finding this safe refuge and snuggling up until the possibility of being proven wrong has disappeared.

In fact, you actually condone this tantrum throwing. You call it "being triggered".

I really, really don't mean to offend you, although, if I do I don't care. Here's the thing. You know who else throws a tantrum whenever they're challenged or vaguely hurt and hides in a designated room until they feel better? Babies

You are behaving like babies and for the generation about to take the reins of the free world that is of concern. So, instead of choosing to be a perpetual infant, how about you...

TRIGGER WARNING*

...man up and ask conservative millennials. We don't suck. We blow. We are the bellows blowing life and air into every topic you've crossed off the things you're allowed to talk about list, and we know you hate us for it. We know you think we're mean and bigoted and evil. You've told us enough times, usually when we're annihilating your argument with reason and fact.

But we don't hate you. Sure we think you're naive and boring and a little bit stupid, and yes, we do spend a good portion of our free time laughing at you, but we don't hate you and we can save you from a life of anxiety, ignorance, and general lack of amusement.

See, conservative millennials are a lot of fun. We're funny and edgy and like pushing boundaries. We dig dangerous politics, controversial conversations and have a wicked sense of humor, and we operate under the assumption that if someone offends you, you offend them right back.

You may think we're going to hell for this or whatever your atheist version of hell is. You may be right, but I guarantee if we are going to hell it will be in a fast car with lots of money ready to wreak hellish havoc when we get there. Come over to the dark side. We'll take you in. The ball is in your court.

P.S.

TRIGGER WARNING

Male privilege is bullshit. Oh, and I almost forgot, MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Politically correct garbage has got to be called out. It seems that social justice warriors think that if you change the words you use for things you can change reality, but you can't. Just as you can't stop people from using drugs by waging a war on drugs, you can't make people un-racist by banning the "N" word. You can't stop people from being homophobic by banning school children from using the word gay in the playground.

Hey thanks for being this open about how you see us leftist millenials! A lot of things to discuss in this all over the place post. I understand it's more of a fun way of letting off some steam so to speak. My raps aren't always rational arguments either!

However if you're really interessted in discussion and feel like leftist millenials have let you down I'm here and I'm sure you can't hurt or trigger me. I do however sympathise with people who are emotionally weaker, even though I don't always believe their solutions are the best that's more case to case. The meaning of too PC has always been a bit too fuzzy for me. Just those annoying people standing behind their beliefs? I don't like annoying people but to me that's two different things that sometimes happen in the same person.

Or we could talk Marx if you'd rather? I like his original critique of capitalism that I think some pretty clever people have continued on since. Also considered to be a little "dangerous" to some people and definatly not boring. But I guess every ideology can be dangerous in the wrong hands. At least most of us are here for decentralization! Merry christmas!

I'm glad you saw the humor in this. I consider myself liberal actually and am just taking a piss out of thin-skinned snowflakes, kind of a hobby of mine.

I wrote this after reading a post about all the Christmas songs triggering people this season like Baby It's Cold Outside (supposedly sexist) and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (allegedly encourages bullying) and thought I'de have a little fun.

There's nothing wrong with having different beliefs and opinions. I just think the way some millennials are reacting to opposing views shuts down any possibility of rational discussion. it's like you have to agree with them or you're an instant enemy which is totally absurd and childish.

And yes, any ideology taken too far can be harmful and should never be forced upon anyone. Life is not that black and white and dividing every issue into two sides where you're either with us or against us is just plain stupid.

Anyway, I was just having a little fun.

Agreed espessially about the not black and white part. I think a lot of conflict comes from different understandings of words, maybe they're kind of magical when we actually seem to understand eachother! Not in the capitalist magic Harry Potter way but more the old mystic kind.

As for racism and sexism I feel like it's more interessting to label actions and words than people as those. In my vocabulary or way to think about sexism and racism we're all those things. I do see however how that might make "real nazis" for example seem smaller by crying wolf. But FOR ME it still seems like a more usefull definition.

My point here is not that I'm right but that if we should argue we have to start somewhere we understand eachother. Thanks for reply I enjoy reaching out to the dark side!

As for racism and sexism I feel like it's more interesting to label actions and words than people as those.

This is exactly correct. What I see happening though is that people are being abled as those just for expressing a different idea than what some millennials feel. For example, A comedian tells a racist joke that someone finds offensive. Totally understandable. If you don't like the joke that comedian tells stop listening to that comedian. End of story.

But no, for many easily triggered millennials that is not the end of the story. They now have to start a campaign to professionally wipe that comedian's career off the face of the earth. They do it relentlessly and if anyone even hints at liking that comedian, even if they didn't particularly like that joke, they now get called a racist with so much intense hatred, as if the offended person now has a license to act even more offensive than the joke that started it all. That's just not acceptable. It exists. I'm not going to start a campaign against it. But it is bullshit and I am calling it.

It's interesting to note that black and white comedians tell white joke all the time. I don't hear of anyone being offended by that. No one is banning their shows. We just laugh and go on about our day. If someone is offended they are not starting any campaigns about it.

Women comedians tell sexist jokes about men all the time too and no one is giving them any shit about it. We just laugh. What makes a joke funny, even if it makes us uncomfortable, is there's a bit of truth in it. That's why we laugh. That's why we have comedy. To laugh about shit that makes us uncomfortable to talk about. In many cases, it starts the discussion we need to have.

If we start shutting down everything someone says that offends us and try to cleanse the dialog so our sensitivity is not put under any duress, we stop resembling a democracy and morph into a police state. They have already been trying to designate places as a "free speech zones". This is America! Everyplace is a free speech zone.

If we start legislating what people are allowed to say based on a small groups' personal tastes, where does it stop? That's why we have hundreds of channels to watch and listen too. Everyone's voices can be heard, but starting a movement to silence anyone's voice, jokes or opinions are not a solution for a better world.

Thanks for a long response. Would you also agree that most of us are probably racist/sexist one way or the other? To some degree that is, since it's not black and white.(Most not to the extent that they should be silenced disproportionally anywhere of course) If so, do you think the culture we live in affects the likelyhood of having certain unconsiouss biases?

I believe our current culture is making this trait hit hardest on non white males for example, but this could be debatable as well and isn't the same across the board in all situations. But generally, that's why I personally might care more about hate on groups in one direction.(Note that I love sarcasm and even understand the value of shock in humor, what I think is hatefull is really irrelevant to my point)

I don't want to support people who further spread these already established norms as I believe they divide us into unnececary groups. I do all the time though since I've learnt to accept I'm too picky to survive otherwise, but I don't support THE WORST ones to me.

If I can use my voice to let people know what they're supporting and get my point through without just turning people against me I will. And I guess most will. Although this is pretty challenging if you don't have some pretty solid arguments and definately seems to go wrong often. But that's just people complaining without arguments which's just not interessting.(unless they're really emotionally hurt then I can respect that without fully understanding but I wouldn't campaign over it so to speak.)

If these complaints made by individuals with different degrees of what's too evil to support then say get 'someone' cancelled from 'somewhere', In my opinion, you're blame would be better directed at the 'somewhere'. Which is bascally always a business ruled by capital.(Steem being an exception ruled by whales investments mostly). This never means you're not allowed to say anything, just not on this businessess microphone.

I feel bad for people not daring to say what they're thinking because they're unsure if they're going to get critique. But that's not what the social left is built on and their's "SJWs" in every social circle if it means over doing what you think others think is right. Movements by people to me aren't the problem it's how the system always capitalises on them. I read your post about 1984 too but I see us as put in categories against each other by the market to create demand out of nothing. Not by some easily triggered mob of leftist snowlake people that doesn't exist, not as a homogeneous group.

Sorry for not keeping my opinions shorter, have a great day!..

Most of the time, we see only what we want to see, or what others tell us to see, instead of really investigate to see what is really there. We embrace illusions only because we are presented with the illusion that they are embraced by the majority. When in truth, they only become popular because they are pounded at us by the media with such an intensity and high level of repetition that its mere force disguises lies and truths. And like obedient schoolchildren, we do not question their validity and swallow everything up like medicine.

Why? Because since the earliest days of our youth, we have been conditioned to accept that the direction of the herd, and authority anywhere — is always right.

Sheep only need a single flock, but people need two: one to belong to and make them feel comfortable, and another to blame all of society’s problems on.

“We are flawed creatures, all of us. Some of us think that means we should fix our flaws. But get rid of my flaws and there would be no one left.”
― Sarah Vowell, Take the Cannoli

Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.”

Careful man! They are fragile. Don’t want to break bones around here hahha.

Funny thing is, every time I've walked on eggshells they just get crushed. It happens every time. Same thing with snowflakes. They just melt right before your eyes. Hahahaha!

I'm a millenial and I would say by current standards I lean more to conservative side which is a strange thing to say because a few years back being liberal was the way to go during the civil rights movements where injustice wasn't looked for and knitpicked but was in your face. You didn't choose to be an activist you had the calling and you answered.

These kids have no great war and focusing on minutia of the problem with such ferocity, like i realise they have misguided good intentions and all but even if you were to achieve your most outlandish of thought policing goals it means nothing in the grand scheme of things.

If only all that energy could be channelled into value generating goods and services instead of bickering over things that wont matter in the long term we would be in such a better space as a society

There's plenty to be pissed off about for sure and so many injustices in the world and society, but breaking down into a triggered nervous mess just because someone challenges your belief is acceptable when you're seven or eight years old, but by the time you're 18 it's time to grow up.

People with opposing views are not the enemy. It takes many perspectives and being able to discuss them intelligently to get the full picture on any issue. None of us have the 100% correct answer to anything just because we feel the way we do.

And seeing people screaming at others for being intolerant is like yelling at someone to love you or else. It just doesn't work.

Besides, It's fun taking a piss out of the absurdity of such a stance, the aim of this entire post.

What me worry... Their stress and anxiety/depression levels will cull the population in time.

thanks a lot for this excellent read... in all of what you wrote, very serious and not funny @ all, my belly hurts a lot now... 😃

Actually, this entire post is not meant to be serious at all and only meant to be funny.

I get you, sorry that I forgot to mark my comment as < sarcasm >... We just should not forget that all comedies/jokes have their amount of truthtruth implemented in them... 😎😎

Exactly. That's what makes them funny.

BRAVO!!! 🙌🏼👏🏼👍🏻
