Suicides Among People Who Serve and Are Unable to Adjust

Hello Friends,

Here I am Lucia again trying to find a good and virtuous topic to inscribe and share at the same time to learn about.

So the topic for today is "Suicides Among People Who Serve and Are Unable to Adjust".

The focus is on why so many service men and women find it almost impossible to adapt to civilian life after their military period expires. This is a global problem as media reports show. In Australia, as in other places, many choose suicide instead of trying to do so. Some also have brain damage from explosives and things they may have witnessed or have been part of, and that is something they can not escape.

In recent months, the premature death of many people in other areas, such as the police, ambulance drivers, paramedics and the medical profession, has also drawn attention. Why young doctors who have everything they expect to end up dead by their own hands? Some attribute it to stress and young interns must work. Others report traumatic cases and death that they see during their day or night.

The trauma that many of these people have to face in the course of their work is terrible. A paramedic said recently that he was called to an accident and that the dead driver of one of the vehicles was his son. Other paramedics are called to recover bodies that have been badly damaged by accidents, burns, gunfire and, more recently, beheadings.

The police are dealing with the same stress after being called as first responders to many horrendous scenes. In some cases, they face death when enraged lunatics threaten them with weapons. Some do not survive leaving their colleagues to deal with later mathematics.

Many years ago, when I was a medical student, there was an incident when in the library, late at night, the smell of formaldehyde in the dissection room below was quite strong. It was a hot night and the windows were open. On the way home while driving my car, there were images before my eyes of corpses. It was quite scary and the trip became a nightmare.

It is possible, therefore, to understand how and why those who see death and trauma every day become depressed. They are dealing with pain on a level that most of us can not imagine and reach them. Some of the bodies are those of small children who have been brutalized or killed.

In a recent case in Queensland, a man put a two-year-old boy in the bathroom and turned on the tap. Then he hit the young man in the face and broke into his arms. The child's skin was peeling off 40% of his body when the ambulance paramedics arrived. Who can think about what that child suffered during his long months of recovery? The police have to deal with the perpetrator who finally received 12 years in prison. The child has a life of scars.

When summarized, it is not surprising that so many who serve the community take their own lives. There are some things that one can not overcome and when they multiply many times, the problem of moving forward becomes increasingly difficult.
