Progress on our Property!

in #life7 years ago

A few months back, I posted about our plans for our mountain property.

At the time, we were expecting my parents to move onto the land by the end of the year. Unfortunately, that was not to be. My dad's health worsened, and he passed away in late October.

My mom is still planning to move onto the property sometime next year, and so my husband and I went ahead and started clearing the ground for her building site in the month of November. We rented a trackhoe for a week, and worked 12 hour days to get everything finished. We even had a couple of friends come to help us one of the days. It was a BIG job. We used two tanks of diesel, took four trips to the dump with a trailer full of old barn junk our property's previous owners had left behind, and got nice, large blisters on our hands.

But so worth it! Now I can walk around in the area where our barn used to sit, without tripping over junk, sinking into a mud hole, or getting tangled up in brambles and thorns. Check out the difference a week worth of hard work made:

This is what the area looked like before we started.

And here's what it looks like now:

You can hardly tell they're the same place, right!? The area is now smoothly graded to accommodate my mom's living quarters. (She hasn't decided yet whether she's going to move her singlewide mobile home onto the property, or buy one of those fancy "park model" RVs.) And there should be plenty of room left over for a garden or some nice landscaping.

By the time we finished the work, the weather was still mild for November, so we tried spreading rye grass seed. But the weather promptly turned cold and the grass never came up. Hopefully we won't experience too much erosion between now and spring.

Next on the property work agenda:

  • Get some plumbing and electric work done
  • Move Mom onto the property
  • Tear down old, decrepit house
  • Build a greenhouse aquaponics system
  • Build our tiny home!

I'll be sure to keep y'all posted.

I love you, Steemit!

WOW! That is a transformation! SO MUCH WORK! Can't wait to see how it all comes together!

Looking good so far, I love projects like this. Its long and hard work, but soon your mom will have a place there. Best of luck!

That transformation - wow!

Did your husband do this with the trackhoe? If so, how did he know how to grade the ground so professionally? A how-to on how to get the most out of a rented trackhoe would make a great post! (But if you're anything like me, you get so involved in a project like this that you never remember to take pictures.)

We've been thinking of renting one ourselves to take care of some landscaping issues that are just too big to do by hand.

Yeah, this was all done with the trackhoe. He did landscaping installment many years ago, so he had some experience with grading and operating large machinery. Most of the week was spent pulling old pieces of wood out of the ground from where the barn used to be. And then, since the barn used to house horses, chickens, pigs, and goats at different times in its life, the soil beneath and around it was basically black muck. That had to be double-dug and spread around in order to achieve a soil consistency that would support a structure. The last two days were spent actually grading, but we didn't completely finish before we had to turn the trackhoe back in, so we hired another guy to come out and finish the grading for us. It only took him one day--he said my husband had done a great job, and he only had to level out the building site and dig a trench for drainage.

Wow now that is a big difference and yes loads of garden space!

So glad to see you back here :) I was worried for a while that you had left us forever. Nice work on the land too! I'm sure it will look fantastic when you're all done with it.

There was grieving, and then there was work to do, and then there was more grieving. Also, I was getting a little burned out trying to write an article every day. It was keeping me from working on my fiction. So I'm back, but I'm not going to try and be a daily poster. I have novels to write!

Completely understandable. I hope you and your family are holding up alright. I missed reading your stuff because I really enjoy it.

Great job! This looks like a huge project, and I'm excited to see how it unfolds!

wow! great job with the transformation - looking forward to seeing more!
