Reflecting on a memory of my Singapore Airlines HQ interview back in 2008

Memory of the interview

Admin Interviewer:
"So how much do you know about aircrafts and why do you want to be in the piloting line?"

Me:
"Honestly, I don't know much about aircrafts other than the usual Boeing models. But I have almost perfect knowledge of satellites, rockets - all the spacecrafts out there. Like the Soyuz, Apollo 13, and the Mars exploration rovers. I guess the reason -"

Pilot Interviewer:
"I take it that piloting is some sort of a downgraded dream of being an astronaut?"

Me:
"Yes. Not everybody gets to be an astronaut."

Pilot interviewer:
-laughs-
"I said the same thing 15 years ago. But now I just hope to collect enough money for someone to fly me up to space."

Needless to say, I did not pass the test. The 8-bit looking flight simulator caught me off-guard too. I was expecting something realistic and comprehensible!

Almost 10 years after

Looking back, I can't even tell why I went for that interview. Perhaps I just couldn't figure out what to do with my Electrical and Computer Systems background. There just weren't any interesting projects on the horizon, at least here in Malaysia. Or maybe, I'm just not very good with commitments - always wanting to explore my options. There's always more to learn, and it's difficult to box myself into one thing, indefinitely.

I'm just glad that I've been keeping tabs on geeky futuristic stuff for the longest time. Long enough to discover crypto-currencies and its democratisation of social values. Made possible entirely through non-violence.

Cryptoeconomic state machines seem to be the missing link that unifies the progress of all forward-thinking technologies. Combined with the advent of the Internet of Things (IoT), the whole deal about cryptostuff is about immortalising the transition states of our world through time.

So to tie back to my beef against specialised, long-term work commitments.. I just think it's fantastic there are almost limitless ways to contribute meaningfully anytime, anywhere, and in any capacity - especially on something like Steemit.

While I think it's important that we remain cogs in the wheel where needed, I also think it's equally important to have the freedom for cross-disciplinary pollination. Rewarding continuous improvement and solid, ceaseless learning will make all the difference in the world.

My choice to have holdings in my preferred crypto-currencies actually make me feel like I belong, even empowered to make a difference in my own little ways. Definitely can't say the same for government backed fiat-currencies, like the Malaysian Ringgit that I use everyday.

I believe that thinking inside the box is vital... too many rush to spend time outside and loose the focus. If the box represents life (which what else would it represent), we must look at ways to improve that situation for all. Once we do that we are on solid footing and may escape to infinite possibility outside.

I agree with you completely. I knew I was missing a point in the little essay, and I've revised it! Sometimes I wish I stick to something long enough to master it, but what I do is spreading my interests a little too far and wide to truly be a master of something.. well, unless mastering learning skills is a thing lol.

Great message brother. I too have never been able to fathom a specialized long-term work commitment and appreciate the fantastic infinity of steemit. I just read this after posting an article about how epic steemit is Here . Check it if you have a moment :0 take care

Thanks brother! Definitely seeing Steemit as some sort of open-freelance platform. Nice post - glad you've found your place as well. Personally I'm doing whatever I can to figure out ways to bridge Steem and fiat in meaningful ways in order to add to its value as a currency!

Sounds like a good idea to me, cheers!

I agree. The uses of the platform are only as limited as the creativity of the human mind.

Just checked out your account. What a cute duck! Too bad I missed that post a couple days ago! And I see that you've been testing out different types of posts - can't wait for your decentralized living one!

I posted 2 decentralized living posts. But I appreciate the encouragement, Kevin!

At least you were utterly honest with the interviewer! He might not have expected that!!

Lol at least I got a free 2-days stay in Singapore xD

To the moon!

There's a massive digital world of unexplored landscapes yet to be discovered. Memories like this one are fuel for the journeys ahead.

excellent post, a true artist congratulations

what a memory

It was hidden as one of my facebook updates xD

Interesting post. Thank you!

Thank you too!

Reflecting on my interview for Singapore Airflines Cabin Crew:

Group interview. Interviewer asked where we would bring a foreigner friend to in Singapore.

Everyone said the same shit. Museum and all that historical garbage.

I said, "If they wanted to go such places, they can Google it themselves or sign up for some tour. I will bring them clubbing."

The interview laughed.

I failed the first round.
