How I Protect Myself From CHINA'S Air Pollution

in #life6 years ago

Hello Steem Blockchain!

I have been living in China for 4 years and the air pollution and dust can get pretty nasty. I find that dust particles accumulate very quickly in my home and it requires constant sweeping. Especially the windowsills, just a quick wipe can pick up a bunch of black residue from God knows where.

That is why I am a huge advocate of using something called a Neti Pot!

The neti pot is used for something called nasal irrigation. Basically, you fill up this pot with filtered lukewarm water and then pour a packet containing salt and baking soda.

When you mix it up into a solution and pour it through one nostril, it irrigates your sinuses and helps to remove allergens and other foreign particles that cause allergies and inflammation. The water then drains out from the other nostril and your nose feels so much clearer. You can definitely feel an improvement in your breathing once you finish.

From my experience, these neti pots have done so much good for me! I remember a time where my sinuses were constantly inflamed. You could see bulges beside my nose but once I started to use the neti pot a few times a week, the inflammation went away and hasn't come back!

I am sure my body has to work hard to clear our all these foreign particles every day that I live here. There is a lot of dust floating around here and it is good to do what you can to stay healthy. Some people from Western countries move to China and then develop asthma a few years later due to the pollution. I am fortunate to not have this issue and I hope I never do. I am a firm believer that nasal irrigation can do wonder for you. Give it a try!

Thanks for reading & watching!

Nasal irrigation is very healthy practice. Many professional athletes do it before competition to improve breathing and performance. I mix in sea salt & water into my neti pot, and it works wonders.

It definitely works. No question about that. I didn't know it was popular among professional athletes though! Thanks for sharing.

AH nice @kenanqhd, my wife has one that she learned to use at a yoga retreat in India yet it is plastic. It's interesting to see the Chinese design of the neti :)

Btw how awesome you live in China! I've never been there but I saw it twice when looking across the border from Northern Vietnam! :)

Hahaha, actually this neti pot is from Canada. I bought a box and put it in my suitcase. It's really useful.

China is awesome! I'm looking forward to visiting Vietnam one day.

Ow really haha how cool! :) But man the stories I sometimes hear about the air condition in china. And then to think a lot of Chinese people are still cooking on the black coal from the mines.

I hope you will enjoy the rest of your time there and will visit Vietnam as well :) If you do make sure to give Cambodia a visit I loved it there too!

The squeeze bottle from NeilMed is WAAAAYYY better than the teapot version.

Is it? How come? I am almost finished this one so when I head back to Canada, I can pickup another box of the teapot version or the squeeze bottle.

It's just much easier to use. Because you are applying gentle pressure you don't have tilt your head at a weird angle. Just bend forward so your nose is over the sink, squeeze, and you're done.

It's also faster because of the (again, gentle) water pressure and I think does a better job of cleaning out your nasal cavity.

Alright cool. Thanks. I will try it out when I return to Canada.

Haha I have a neti-pot too! I haven't really used it regularly though. It's just sitting in my bathroom right now. I'm always impatient waiting for it to reach the proper temperature after I boil the water. Your post has inspired me to give it a shot consistently though.

Yes, I used it infrequently but these days I am using it a lot more. I only have like 3 more packets left so I will probably use those up and then buy a new box when I go back to Canada this summer.

You boil the water? I just heat up filtered water until it becomes warm.

I brought a whole box with me but haven't used much. I bet you could find them on Taobao.

Yeah you're supposed to use distilled water from what I've read. In rare cases, people have used tap water and it's lead to brain infections. Sounds crazy I know but I guess I'm just a little sketched after reading that.

Hell no, I would never use China's tap water to irrigate my sinuses lol. Brain infections sounds awful. Holy crap.

Lol no these were cases back in Canada and the States where tap water is relatively healthy. The articles I read just said something along the lines that our stomach has acid that can kill bacteria and organisms in water but our nose obviously doesn't. Even the filtered water here can be a little suspect so I figure it's better to be cautious.

Alright, good looking out!

I saw an article the other day that some people in China buy compressed air, I forgetwhere its from I think the Rocky Mountains or something but there's literally a company selling cans of compressed fresh mountain air for something like $60 a can.

Yup it's true. Most people know it's ridiculous, but I have seen pictures of people selling garbage bags of air in the mountains. I think a lot of people just think it's funny and buy it but China is a crazy place. People can get really wealthy with dumb shit hahaha.

Great job on this one! We're always on the lookout for remarkable video, and this one seemed special. We added it to our list, so now you're on OneLoveDTube Video Picks of the day!

In China maybe there is a lot of pollution as you describe it in your publication, but it is a beautiful country, I have not had the pleasure of going but I have seen through the lenses of other people that it is a wonderful place, here in my Venezuela there is contamination , maybe not in a point like that, but if there are, to decongest some nostrils, we use a steam bath, it is a very simple and quick method to place your face high over a pot or steamer with boiled water and a little of menthol and with a towel on your head, you do all the steam with your eyes closed, that will help you decongest and clean your nostrils.

China is in fact a beautiful country.
Wow that method sounds good as well. I am sure it can help the nostrils. How will your eyes feel after? Will the steam help to make your eyes feel relaxed and less strained?

The detail of this treatment is not to put the water very hot, it must be tolerable and only a little steam will help your nostrils. Your eyes should be well closed and if you can place a band on them better.

I've thought of trying Neti for a while. I'm just back to Wales where the air is so much cleaner that in India. I'm sure it's a similar story in China, but for most of India the pollution is out of control.

I am in China. The pollution in big cities is serious. But I am in a good rural environment with good mountains and water. It is recommended that you have time to play in the rural town and feel the fresh air in China.

I don't want to live in cities like Beijing simply because of the pollution. I live in Qinhuangdao and the air pollution isn't as bad as the bigger cities, but it is located in Hebei province which is the most polluted province in China.

Whenever I go to Qinglong, a rural county of Qinhuangdao, the air quality is much better over there.

That's a great recommendation, I remember when I was in China, I fell sick and I blame the pollution, this seems like a great way to clean out the nose! Seems like a good gift to give as well, haha... the body needs help with this kind of pollution

It really comes in handy. Like I said in my post, my sinuses were always inflamed until I used this neti pot everyday for about a week. After that, my sinuses drastically reduced in inflammation and they never became inflamed again! So I definitely agree with you in saying that the body needs help when dealing with this kind of pollution.
