This morning I have been perusing the lumpy black mould that currently adorns our walls by the stairs.

Said mould is accompanied by peeling paint and some kind of strange bubbly brown stuff.

I guess it's kind of pretty, in an alien kinda way.

But clearly, it's not welcome here.

These are relatively new mouldy appearances, and I was just searching for how I could be grateful for their little visit. And I realised I could be thankful for the lesson they have taught me.

What is this lesson?

Don't blindly trust strangers who knock on your door and offer to fix your roof.

You see, a little while ago my love and I discovered that a few roof tiles had come down.

No biggie.

We'd get them fixed at some point.

Then as happy happenstance would have it, soon after our discovery, a knock came at the front door.

Hello...?

Oh hello there, my partner and I are roofers... we're just working on a house down the road and noticed that you've got some tiles missing. Would you like us to get those fixed for you?

What a stroke of luck!

Why yes, thank you very kindly. This is an acceptable, random offer from a couple of thickly Irish accented strangers.

Later that day, said random strangers were given access, up a ladder to the roof. Where they spent some time banging and hammering and

clearly doing an excellent job.

We paid them in folding money and said our cheery goodbyes.

Cut forward a few months...

After a particularly wet few weeks we started to notice some browny/black marks appearing on our walls.

The marks grew.

No.

They bloomed.

The paint peeled.

Something was definitely not right here.

A little thinking with our noggins led us to believe there was something up with the roof again. And all this wetter than wet rain was somehow getting in and causing the mould to appear.

When some more random strangers did not, this time, appear at the front door to fix everything, we took it upon ourselves to call someone.

This someone - we shall call him Genuine Roofer - came to assess our troubles.

It took him no time to see what the problem was.

There's a bit of your roof missing!

Huh?

Yep you've got a great gaping hole there... Did someone come and take a bit of your roof?

Hmmmmm.

It would seem so.

Those rascally randoms had apparently spent a couple of hours on our roof, hammering away at nothing and in fact half-inching some integral rain-stopping roof components.

They nicked our bloody roof!!

Well, it just goes to show...

You can't believe every random stranger that shows up at your door.

Consider this a very good lesson learned... and I thank you, you random rascals for teaching me to be a little more wordly-wise when it comes to answering the door to strangers...

Oops, one second, there's someone at the door....

What's that?

You've seen that my car needs a new exhaust?

Why thank you, how kind, yes please fix it... here are the keys.....

Who I'm Loving Right Now:

@meesterboom

Follow me, @johleen if you like the kind of stuff I do. :)

Sort:

A lesson learned to not hire anyone who advertises from off the street.

Indeed. :)

Oh dear, as soon as I heard the word, Irish I thought they had made off with your house or something hahaha sorry @wrongjohn you know I love the Irish really (I don't there always knicking something) So a lesson for all readers of this post, go and knock on @johleen door she is a sucker for giving money out to random strangers to steel stuff from her house. haha

Haha! I know right... Here everyone.... have some money....there's plenty here for everyone!! Weeeeeeee!! [throws handfuls of cash in the air]

lol, it is probably like been on steemit, I keep upvoting and i sometimes feel like I'm throwing steemit money in the air hahaha

The swines!! I have heard of the sort who do a job poorly or try to strongarm you into further repairs after getting one foot in the for but this is just not on.

Next person that comes to my door is getting punched in the neck. No questions asked!

Right?! The sheer audacity almost, almost, deserved the cash they swindled!

I hope your mother in law isn't due to come round for a cuppa... haha!

Will at least I would have cause!! The postman is due, poor fool!

Uh oh.. Your postman will need an apology from me I feel. Lol!

He will probably be round later ;0)

Ha! Well I'll put the kettle on and get me first aid kit at the ready!

Oh my god, you are going to fling boiling water on him/her? You are a monster!!

Can I come and watch? Hate royal mail these days

Good grief man!! Get yourself together!!

There's no flinging going on at this house.

A slow pour is all you need....

Fecking basturts!! Why I oughtta! Makes my blood boil hearing stories of swindlers like that. That's why I have a hard time trusting people. It's so easy to be trustworthy, to do a good job, help others and get paid. All those people who take the easy way and try to bamboozle people will get what's coming to them. I imagine that they anticipated you and your husband not even checking the job they did. They might've even taken some of the roof off themselves!

I wholeheartedly agree with who you're loving right now. All the ladies (and gents) love the Boommeister <3 I mean, what's not to love!?

What's not to love..... exactly!!

I know, they were a pair of cheeky mofos!!

But you know, I don't really feel angry about it for some reason. There are certain things in life that do make my blood boil, but this wasn't one of them.

I guess because I can't quite believe they actually stole a piece of our roof. I mean, what??! Why??!

I'm actually kinda fascinated about the sort of life those guys must lead, that means they knock on people's doors in the off chance they'll be able to steal a bit of their roof.... hahaha!

People have done stranger things for money haha When people think that they want to take the shortcut, they could get pretty innovative with their approach. I don't know how sustainable their con is, but I do hope that karma would be poetic, like they slip off a roof a something to do with floors haha!

Very true my friend. I'm all for getting creative when it comes to earning money... but getting creative when you're nicking it (or stuff) should not be encouraged haha!

Although I hope that they stop conning people, I also have a strange hope that our little piece of roof for some reason made them rich and helped them to turn their lives around in some way. Then it would be worth it!!

That's such a positive way to look at it! You know, now that you mention it, I wish that was the case as well hahaha!

It's funny how some things are easy to be positive about and other things are more challenging.

The other day someone was talking to my other half about how he thought humans should stop "breeding" because we're so awful and destroying the planet.

He said to my other half, How many kids have you got?

Tim replied, we've got 3,

Then this other guy said Oh so you think your genes are that important then?

And I swear I could have gone round and stabbed that guy, I was so angry with him. What a crap thing to say!!

Seriously!? The nerve on that guy! You know what? Maybe he's just covering up his insecurities. He's most likely sterile, so yeah. God, I don't know how I would've reacted if I was confronted by that type of guy. Probably violently or probably indifferently.

Right?! I don't think I could have been held accountable for my actions.... it's a good job I wasn't actually there I think. :)

Yes ... havevto aleays be careful ... upvoted and followed

Thanks. :)

Omg. I'm glad you shared this. I bet they wanted you to call them back to make a bigger hole in your roof.

Haha! Most likely! Thanks for commenting. :)

We actually have an opposite story. A couple of years back, we had a bad storm and an extremely large tree on our boundary came down and entirely covered our back lawn. There was other tree damage too. While we were sitting there wondering how the hell we were going to find an arborist when the whole of the city would be fighting over them, there was a ring at the doorbell (sound familiar?) I went to the door in my dressing gown and there was an arborist who was going round the neighbourhood seeing if anybody needed help. I nearly hugged him. It took his whole team over a week to sort out our problems, but we were extremely grateful we got to Gav first!

Ahh you have restored my faith in random strangers haha! This is lovely... I do think that the majority of people in the world are genuinely interested in helping out rather than swindling.

That must have been one hell of a storm to bring down that tree!
