If You Could Travel Back in Time, What Would You Do?

What would you do if you could go back in time?

Imagine it's 2036, and Elon Musk has finally perfected time travel. You can revisit any point in the past. When would you return to and what would you do?

A big Beatles fan, I've always wanted to go back and save the life of John Lennon. So we hop in and travel to Jan 1, 1980. Now, I have to get to New York City, find the Dakota apartment building where he and Yoko live and somehow warn him not to give up his security team in the fall. How do I convince the doorman at the Dakota that the nutjob holding a copy of Catcher in the Rye is about to murder Lennon? A pretty tall order, right?

Below, John gives one of his last interviews with Radio One DJ Andy Peebles Dec 6, 1980 - two days before he was killed:

The other thing is, suppose we could jump back to that era while still retaining the knowledge of history that have now? In 1980 - there are no cellphones, internet, email, or social media. No online gaming, (you won't be playing League of Legends or Call of Duty!, people would freak out!) Computer gaming consists of Pong.

You'll be playing this game on your TV set in 1980, Pong sure looks like fun doesn't it?

No smart TV's, rap music is confined to the Black community, country music has not yet crossed over into sounding like pop, Michael Jackson isn't yet "The Kig of pop" and there's no Justin Bieber...

Typical 80's bands:

We would know the outcome of every US.Presidential election and the future British Prime Ministers. I would be bored to death. The upside is, being be able to play the stock market like a champ. Buy AAPL at $20? DONE! Load up on Bitcoin in 2010 while avoiding the Mt. Gox debacle? DONE! I'd be living large with everyone wanting to know about my impeccible timing. However the grind from 1980 to 2019 would be a snoozefest. Watching everyone get excited about developments in the news when I would already know the outcome would put a huge damper on things. However there would always be the ability to do good with that foreknowledge.

For example, being able to warn the occupants of the World Trade Center on 9/11 may not be as easy as it might seem. Getting a message to Steve Jobs about his cancer, Michael Jackson about Propofil (when his own family couldn't even reach him) Amy Winehouse, Tupac and Kurt Cobain, so many people we've lost... Trying to change the future (which would be my past) would become a fulltime job with no guarantee of success, but very much worth a try.

We may not be able to "Turn Back Time" but the one thing we can do right now is to cherish the people we love...

Would you like to return to an earlier time in history? If so, when? and what would you do?

Thank you so much!

One of my favorite theories is that Satoshi Nakamoto was a time traveler and has returned home. I think that I would do what he did. Save the bitcoin, save the world...

Thanks to @paradigmprospect, this post was resteemed and highlighted in today's edition of The Daily Sneak.

Thank you for your efforts to create quality content!

First, thank you for "sneaking" over here and supporting this lonely post. I was actually thinking about who Satoshi might be before I switched focus to Lennon. Could it be a group of people? But dropping in from another time would sure make it hard to find him! :) Thanks again.

I would be really surprised if those coins ever moved, to be honest.

I would warn my brother of his heart condition

That would be a wonderful thing to do. With the knowledge we have now, so much misfortune could be avoided and so much good could be accomplished.

Saving John Lennon would sure be a noble idea. I can tell you like music, and saving all of those singers would be a worthy idea.

I’d change the Patriots to not winning their first super bowl so that they wouldn’t have thier dynasty. Many of their fans gloat so much.

I hear you, although as an Eagles fan, the Cowboys are our hated rivals! :) Lennon's killing struck me because not only was he a man of peace, but he was shot going home to say goodnight to his son. He was originally supposed to go out with his wife which would have brought him home late enough to have the car pull into the protected courtyard of the Dakota building instead of stopping at the curb which gave the killer his chance.

The greatest fun, travelling backwards in the past, takes place in my imagination. Just like you did here, it's a great pleasure to take on certain scenarios and sense that the whole thing would be less straightforward. Dancing around in a past as a knowledgeable person alone would probably even be quite dangerous. If you love the risk of losing your life in the process, you might also tend to live a risky lifestyle in your present.
I wouldn't want to save anyone. But of course, if I were stuffed with knowledge and compassion came over me in a current situation, I would instinctively want to save. So it's a good thing this won't work.

One thing I really would have liked to have been part of is the journey to the moon in a spaceship. To experience the universe in a small nutshell out there, that would certainly be something. But where would I be able to hide? In addition I would probably need a quite large vomit bag :)

Other than that: I am not a believer of saving people from the bad things happened to them. If so, you'd have to save all of them. Now, that's a total different scenario.

Great question you asked!

I'm actually very risk-averse. No bungee jumping or skydiving for me! If there were ever a person that deserved to be saved, Lennon is the one.

His push for peace and the campaign to end the Vietnam war saved countless lives. He did not deserve to be shot in the back by a coward.
