Deep In The Woods They Rest [Original Poem And Photo]
There is a place deep in the woods,
a sinkhole covered with vegetation so deeply green
that it calms you mind like a blanket of hush early winter snow.
There are rough stones round the hole,
laid not in a circle but in a hexagon which builds
a low wall to keep the resting within.
There are memories of days of sun and joy,
then there are shrieks of bright red pain,
then there is the struggle, a breath, then nothing.
Short beds of mossy stone and leafy green
tell us the stories of youth and bravery,
of maybe foolish but immensely strong belief
that they fought for the right thing,
that they would gladly do it again,
that their sacrifice was not in vain.
Because of them we now know the meaning of the word freedom.
Because of them we now speak the language of our grandfathers.
Because of them who are long dead, we are alive.
Do not ever forget why they fought and died,
never forget!
Sleep well, my friends. We will never forget you!

This poem was inspired by the visit to the last resting place of the 45 partisans, women and men, who were fatally injured and died despite the best efforts of the doctors and staff from the Partisan hospital Jelendol during the World War II.
Those were the darkest and bloodiest days in our recent history. We must do everything to keep the peace. Let those days never ever happen again!!!
