[ STEEMITIQUETTE #5 ] FORGIVE: Healing Your Soul

in #life8 years ago (edited)

Forgiveness doesn’t come easy especially when the pain lingers no matter what you do. But those who forgive others have become stronger and live longer, according to a research Luther College psychologist Loren Toussaint.

Easier said than done.

Forgiving does not mean forgetting. But it does give freedom from all the anger and hostility towards those who have done you wrong. And anger is not one baggage you want to carry all your life.

We ought to forgive others who have hurt us and caused us pain because at one point or another, we have hurt other people, too.

Forgiveness doesn’t translate to weakness. On the contrary, it shows how strong a person is by leaving the past behind and moving on. Because it really takes a very strong person to forgive someone and yet deal with the pain that may last a lifetime.

We forgive because it’s the right thing to do. At some point, we will also need forgiveness of our wrong doings.

WHAT OTHER PEOPLE SAY

The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong. - Mahatma Gandhi

It's one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself, to forgive. Forgive everybody. - Maya Angelou

Never forget the three powerful resources you always have available to you: love, prayer, and forgiveness. - H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

And you know, when you've experienced grace and you feel like you've been forgiven, you're a lot more forgiving of other people. You're a lot more gracious to others. - Rick Warren

To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you. - Lewis B. Smedes

You can't forgive without loving. And I don't mean sentimentality. I don't mean mush. I mean having enough courage to stand up and say, 'I forgive. I'm finished with it.' - Maya Angelou

We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive. He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love. There is some good in the worst of us and some evil in the best of us. When we discover this, we are less prone to hate our enemies. - Martin Luther King, Jr.

Application

We say so much and we do so much. Here in steemit, our words are our best assets but can also be dangerous “weapon of mass destruction”. In our diversity, we don’t know who we hurt with our words or actions. A careful choice of words can go a long, long way with our interrelationship in our community.

However, as careful as we are, hurtful words can slip through the cracks and who knows how it will hurt others. If you are at the receiving end it’s best to understand that we all have tendencies to make mistakes. And the forgiveness we show to those who might have hurt us indicates how a strong and unified community steemit is.

If we are a community that has the power to forgive, then we also have the power to endure any challenge ahead of us. We live longer and better than anyone else because we know how to forgive.

Thanks for the wise words. One benefit of forgiving is that it allows you to move on and turn your attention to something else. Seeking vengeance after being wronged or victimized is heroic in a way, but it does get you stuck in a rut that's really hard to get out of.

Yes, forgiving someone does have the benefit of moving on and not dwelling in the past hurtful experience. And it sure makes you stronger, too in dealing similar hostility. If all can be forgiving, this community will be a better place to thrive in. Thanks for dropping by @nxtblg
