Previously I talked about how as kids, we had a lot more freedom to choose what we wanted to be when we grow up because we didn't had other people's expectations on our shoulders. We could dream about becoming whatever we admired.

But growing up, despite our desire to be different, we are usually left in a difficult situation where we have to make a big decision about our career which in most cases, isn't related to the one we mentioned back in our childhood.

The reason for this is quite clear - fear. We are afraid to choose because we fear that we might make the wrong choice. In fact, we find it more comfortable if we have less options to choose from, because then the chances of making a bad choice is comparatively less.

And when it comes to something like career, the thought alone of making the wrong choice scares us. We just simply don't wanna get stuck. So we take the easy route. The route everyone follows, because like I said, when it gets overwhelming, we like our decisions taken for us.

Fear Of Choosing

Look up any typical motivational video on YouTube, and you will find how almost all of them emphasize so damn much about the idea of having some sort of "master plan" to be successful and happy in life.

They over-exaggerate the idea of having goals and how you should devote your entire life into achieving that goal, which in my honest opinion, is a little misleading and ironically, leads to feelings of disappointment and dissatisfaction.

If you are not happy in your journey to get somewhere, you are probably not going to be happy when you reach that place either. The journey is what makes sense of the destination.

Sometimes, we are so damn scared to choose, that we would rather let others take our decisions for us, just so that we would have someone to blame if things don't work out in the future, and we can pretend that we are not responsible.

Why Not Having A Plan Can Be A Good Thing

It is only when you don't attach yourself with a single opportunity, do you get to explore others. If you are completely fixated on the idea of becoming an engineer, you might never even come to know that you loved acting, just because you never tried it.

It was the same for me too. If I had stuck only and only with singing as a potential future career, I wouldn't be writing this article right now. But I didn't. I gave myself time and let myself try out new things that interested me.

That's exactly how I found my love for writing. And through writing, I further found my love for poetry and then mixed it with my love for singing which led me to start writing songs, instead of writing just for fun.

The more you let yourself discover different things, rather than blinding yourself in the pursuit of just one, the easier it becomes to find out what you truly want out of life and what you really wanna become.
