Why You Shouldn't Plan Your Life Out (Part I)

When we were kids, the question of "What do you wanna become when you grow up?" didn't really stress us that much because back then, we literally had no idea of how reality works.

From artists to astronauts, our answers sure were full of creative imagination, but somehow and somewhere between the process of growing up, those answers started to feel unsuitable. Reality hit us.

As we grew older even further, we slowly began to lower our expectations and look for the more realistic approach. But doing so, we inevitably started to lose our uniqueness and individuality, something that separated us from everyone else.

The purpose of this article isn't to make you feel that nostalgia, but to show you how scared we are to not have a plan and why not having a plan can sometimes actually be a good thing.

Even though we say it out loud proudly and confidently on social media, in reality, we are terrified to let our life be an adventure. We are afraid to explore, and find comfort in choosing the same road taken by everyone else.

Peer Pressure

In my early teenage, almost all my friends had a solid (and realistic) idea of what they wanna become and where they wanna end up, while I was still discovering new hobbies and trying to figure out what I really want out of life which eventually led me struggling to find a direction.

My problem wasn't that I had no interests, but quite the opposite, in fact. I had too many. I have loved singing and making art since my childhood, but writing poetry, songs, and now blog posts, is a new hobby, that I love just as much as my older ones.

This is exactly what kept me from making a choice. If I pick one over all the others, I fear feeling that regret of "what could have been instead". Career counselling sure helps, but this is something that in the end, is totally in our own hands.

For some weird reason, it feels embarrassing to not know what you wanna do for a living, especially when all your friends do. Situations like this forces us to rush into making a decision because we want to show others how planned out our life is and how we have figured it all out.

If we made a decision and it works, all well and good. If it doesn't, we come back to that fear of regret I talked about. We began to doubt our decision and wonder what things would have been like if we had chosen the other options.

But this type of thinking is unhealthy, because no matter what you do in life, you are bound to run into problems, some bigger than others, and there may even be times when no easy solution is available.

You literally cannot plan your entire way out of a problem, even if your plan is the most accurate plan of all time. It's the same for business too because life is uncertain, and uncertainty creates risks, avoidable and unavoidable ones.
