The Extraordinary Importance Of Doing Absolutely Nothing (Part I)

It seems like our society has adopted this one false belief that we must always try to be as productive as possible, that all our actions should be work-based, and we must devote all of our time to chase after a goal.

Not just that, even if you are not being productive, you are constantly advised by other people to 'go wild', do something extraordinary, live everyday like it's your last, and all those other typical Hollywood clichés, basically.

But between all this, we underestimate or simply ignore the value of doing nothing. Yes, you read right. Though this might sound super illogical at first, especially to the ones who do believe in the things I mentioned above, but just simply being is in fact a necessity for maintaining long-term productivity.

Sure, you can passionately chase after your dreams and throw off everything that comes in between, but in time, you will most definitely find yourself in a position where you will need a real break, even from the goals that you are strongly committed to.

The Value Of Doing Nothing

Before we dig deeper, I just wanna make sure how 'doing nothing' isn't anything related to sleeping, napping, taking a quick break from work or whatever. It means consciously spending your time to do, well.. nothing, and allowing your mind to wonder in the freedom of the moment.

It's when you clear off all your current thoughts, including the ones of your responsibilities and even your ambitions, and just seeing time flow right in front of you, and letting that moment of stillness and tranquility give you something new to dream about.

You might argue that if all of us have only a limited amount of time on this planet, why waste any of it when we could be doing so much more than what we are doing right now, let alone the idea of doing literally nothing.

Even though that might sound reasonable at first, it's application in real life brings nothing but feelings of being lost in meaninglessness. If you keep feeding yourself the same ideas over and over, ones that include you working your entire life out without ever having some time for yourself, it won't take long for your mind to drive you insane.

The Need For Disposable Time

Your body is not a machine, even if people has metaphorically referred it as one like a million times already. It cannot keep working forever without a few breaks in between, and more importantly, it cannot work while it is being repaired.

Your phone can be charged while it is being used. Same can't be done for us humans. We can't regenerate energy while we are spending it, and that's because we simply aren't designed to multitask. We need separate time to re-oil our system.

We are depended on those few extra hours of disposable time we get to have in a day so we can allow ourselves to finally take those deep breaths and enjoy and live our me time.

Surely, you might just wanna go ahead and use those extra hours to be even more productive and earn a few extra bucks while you're at it, and it may even work for a while, but in the long run you'll eventually start seeing how inefficient you are becoming and how rapidly your productivity is decreasing, which is the exact opposite of what you intended.
