From Hackers, Thieves and Corrupted Politicians to Sea Critters and Internet Satellites | [LEARN & EARN - Week 27]
Hello everyone!
Here is my entry for @brittandjosie's contest: LEARN & EARN - Week 27.
This week there were a few stories about criminals and hackers who got my attention... but there were also other stuff I found to be interesting enough to share.
1) There's a crazy guy disrupting the service from the Metro in NYC. The guy always uses the same MO: he enters a Metro when the train is almost leaving the station, unlocks the safety chains, breaks into the rear cabin of the Metro... and activates the emergency brakes, before disappearing. This has been going on for months, now... and he was never caught. Read more about this at Jalopnik. | Image Source |
2) In Portugal, the Presidents of the City Halls from Santo Tirso and Barcelos and the President of the Porto's Oncology Institute were all arrested and are facing multiple corruption charges. This story is in Portuguese, so you better translate it if you want to know more about this case: Detidos por corrupção os presidentes do IPO-Porto, das Câmaras de Santo Tirso e de Barcelos | Image Source |
3) Anonymous hackers cracked the city of Baltimore's servers and locked the data. Government emails, payments to city departments and real estate transactions can't be processed. The hackers asked for 13 Bitcoins to make things go back to normal. Jack Young, the Mayor of Baltimore has said the city won't pay. Read more about this story at NPR. | Image Source |
4) In Venezuela, the economic crisis is so severe that criminals cannot even afford to buy bullets! Bullets are available on the black market but the thieves and murderers cannot afford the $1 price tag anymore. Associated Press has a good story on this. | Image Source |
5) The climate changes are leading to lower levels of oxygen on the oceans, which, in turn, is putting some marine invertebrates at risk of going blind, at least temporarily. If you are interested in knowing more details about this, you can read this article at IFLScience. | Image Source |
6) Elon Musk's company - SpaceX - has successfully launched the first batch of 60 Satellites which will serve to create a global and fast Internet Service. The total number of planned Satellites is 12 000. If this program works out as expected, Internet Providers all around the world will have to adapt or die. The Business Insider magazine has the whole story. | Image Source |
I hope you have enjoyed reading these stories. Let me know about it on the comments below.
Probably that satellites will able to control the weather. Just like in the movie!
Who knows? Thanks for your comment!
