Imagine a scenario where you have a pool of equally skilled talent. Two managers pick equal teams with the goal of creating the most value. The first manager creates a plan, assigns roles and moderates the team's progress over time. They do … well.
The second manager
takes a different approach. Rather than telling his team members what to do, he spends key time discovering what they want to do. Through observation and strategic questions, he discovers that a large percent of his team are eager to work on a new idea. After consulting as a group, he decides to fund the project and gives them the resources they need. The rest of the team continues to work in a more traditional manner.
Which team do you think created the most value??

Giving your employees more freedom to pursue their own ideas will excite them. Increasing autonomy will show your trust and empower them to perform at their best. Consider testing this with a portion of your team. You may be surprised by how they respond.
