4장 인력의 법칙 ①
윤회를 이해하기 위해 검토해야 할
또 하나의 기본 원리는
인력의 법칙(Law of Attrachion)이다.
이 법칙은 “같은 것들끼리는 서로
끌어당긴다.”는 유유상종(類類相從)의
원칙을 기반으로 한다. 같은 종류의 힘들은
서로에게 끌리는 경향이 있다.

따라서 이 법칙은 친화성의 법칙이라고도
부른다. 특정 강도와 질의 진동을 가진 원자는
진동이 자신과 조화를 이루는 다른 원자를
끌어당긴다. 무선 전신장치들은
주파수가 맞추어졌을 때에만 서로간에
신호를 주고받을 수 있다.

이 법칙은 무정물 에너지계에서뿐만 아니라
생명체의 세계에서도 작용한다.
“새들은 같은 깃끼리 함께 모인다.”는
속담은 이러한 경향을 가리킨다.
새뿐 아니라 다른 동물들도
같은 유형끼리 무리를 짓는다.

인간에 있어서도 관심과 취향이 비슷한
사람들끼리 서로 이끌린다는 것은 일반
상식이다. 같은 방향의 공부나 취미,
경기에 흥미를 갖는 사람들이 모여 모임이나
클럽을 만드는 것도 이러한 경향을 입증해준다.
부처님은 그래서 다음과 같이 말씀하셨다.

“하열한 의향의 중생들은 하열한 의향의
중생들과 한데 어울리고 서로 뜻이 맞는다.
착한 의향의 중생들은 착한 의향의 중생들과
한데 어울리고 서로 뜻이 맞는다.

그들은 과거에도 그렇게 해왔고 미래에도
그렇게 할 것이며 현재도 그렇게 하고 있다.”

정신적 텔래파시는 인력 법칙의 작용을
보여주는 또 다른 예이다.

인력의 법칙이 인간계에 적용될 경우,
다른 계에서는 작용하지 않는 매우 특별한 면이
한 가지 더 있다. 사람은 유사한 성향과
경향을 가진 사람을 끌어당길 뿐만
아니라 종종 그가 아주 좋아하는 물건이나
몹시 갈망하는 조건, 상황 등을 자기 쪽으로
끌어당길 수도 있다.

물질이나 조건을 끌어당기는 이런 특수능력은
사람에게만 있는 것이다.

예를 들어 수년 전에 잃어버린 친구의
주소를 가장 급하고 아쉬울 때에 전혀
뜻밖의 곳에서 찾게 되는 경우가 있다.

이미 절판되어 좀처럼 구할 수 없는 책을
꼭 필요로 할 때에 길가의 헌 책방에서
발견하게 되는 일도 있다. 사람들은
그것을 우연이라고 할 것이다.
그럴지도 모른다.

그러나 우연이 아닌 다른 원리에 따라
일어났다고 할 수는 없는 것일까?
우연만이 유일한 설명일까?
아니 우연이란 말이 과연 설명이 될 수 있을까?

모든 일에는 다 원인이 있다.
그러나 사람들은 그 원인이 밝혀지지 않았거나
알 수 없는 것일 때 이 우연이라는 편리한 말을
끌어내곤 한다.
