How to Keep Going When You Want To Quit

Life can be tough at times. Successful business people know that. It can sometimes get really draining and sometimes we don't know how to move forward.

Anyone who has lived in the real world for a while knows there are many times when it is really tough. We all know there are times when we feel slapped around and it feels like it is impossible to get back up and go at it again.

There's an old saying that says, “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.” This has been attributed to both Joseph Kennedy, father of President John F. Kennedy, and to American football player, Knute Rockne. Who ever said it, I think it's a good idea. You might have head the Billy Ocean song with this title.

We all go through those times when we want to throw up our hands and quit. This is normal. However, the difference between those who succeed and those who don't is that those who succeed become more resourceful and find ways to keep going no matter what.

Here's some pointers that can help you so that you are ready to move forward whatever comes along.

  1. Always be prepared for a variety of outcomes. This adage is very important to succeed. I would also further say that we need to constantly be in a state of preparing. I don't know about you, but some of my greatest challenges come right after I've had a success. After the success comes I want to get lazy, sit back, and take it easy. This is a dangerous time and many people will succumb to the problems. Successful people know that they must constantly prepare by looking at what the environment is today versus what it was like before. They read, they learn new material, they continually find ways to better themselves. This is the best form of preparation.

  2. Make your training as much as possible like what you will encounter in real life. The Russians have a saying, “ Тяжело в обучении, легко в бою.” which means “Hard in training, easy in battle.” This reminds me of what US Navy SEAL team 6 founder, Richard Marcinko, has said."The more you sweat in training, the less you bleed in battle.” Successful people make it a point to create training practices that push them to the limit. This extra push will help bring out the best in them.

  3. Discover what matters and focus on that. Today it is very easy today to get distracted with all of the great tools available in social media. Tools in social media can help you in business. However you got to exercise stringent self-control. Always ask yourself the question "Is this the best thing for me to do now?”

  4. Keep your goal in sight. It was the philosopher Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche who said, “Develop your why & you can bear almost any how.” A worthwhile goal serves as the fuel that you need to drive your engine toward success. Keep your goal in mind and focus on what moves you forward.

  5. Hang around the right people and avoid the wrong people. Associate with people who will inspire you and educate you. Successful people build alliances with key supporters around the world through regular video connections. Get to know technologies that help you stay in touch with important people. Make it your practice to continually develop good relationships.

You don't have to give up when the going gets tough. Life will be tough at times. By embracing these success principles you can do more than just “get going.” You can succeed!

Great words of wisdom and reminders to keep close at heart, especially when the times get tougher. Thank you for this short and sweet article. All for one and one for all! Namaste :)

Thank you, Eric! I appreciate your kind words!

Great information and so good to see you posting again after a little hiatus!

Thank you, kus-knee. Yes, I'm back. Been swamped with other projects but I'm now back and looking forward to doinig more here in Steemit.

When the going gets rough - the rough get rougher :-)

I like it! Getting "rougher" is a good way to approach life!

Giving up is no option. At least to me! Remember: after every down comes an up

I like that! Yes, it is cyclical that when we have a tough time, we can persist through to another good one. The key is to learn from the set-backs. Thanx for stopping by timsaid.

Perseverance! That is the biggest thing I learned from my father who most of his life failed at everything he tried. Had to be tough on him, as I observed through a child's eyes... But he never quit no matter how difficult life was. Eventually in his latter years he found success.

When walking through hell as life dumps on my I have learned to look at the worse case scenario and the best possible outcome. If I can accept the worse case scenario and plan around it I can keep moving forward. The worse case scenery never seems to come to fruition.. Instead life tends to work out.

Great post

Thank you, r2cornell. Your approach is exceptionally appropriate and pragmatic. If we objectively look at the possibilities and accept reality, we do better. I like to think of it as an "optimistic realist" approach. Yes, we see what is happening (the realist) but we see the possibilities which are always better. It has been this way with human beings for several thousand years. Thanx for stopping by and sharing!

Thanx,, r2cornell. Sounds like your father was very wise. Yes, sometimes it just takes good ole perseverance to keep going.

I particularly like your idea of looking at both good and bad scenarios and examining the likelihood of them.

Thanx for stopping by!

Terry

Good post. I'd add: just don't tell anyone you're failing and giving up -- if everyone has the image of you succeeding and persevering, you don't really have the option to quit.

You raise a good point saiku. We can think about the option of failing but it is best to remain strong. Besides, usually most of the negativity is only transitory and we do better focusing our mind on what is possible and searching for solutions. Thank you for your helpful comments.

I agree saiku. I've found that what happens is often 1) you feel down because of some real-world event, 2) you evaluate what to do, 3) you feel pretty depressed. 4) you eventually figure out how to solve it, 5) you take action and overcome it, 6) you're back stronger than ever having gone through the "yuck" and having become a better person.
If you tell the world in or after step 3) that you're feeling terrible, you can do damage. Best to keep quiet there or confide only in trusted sources at that point. Once you're out, you're back to normal and it is best to not have a world of people thinking that you're still in a dire situation.

Thank you for sharing saiku! I appreciate it.
