Az Jazz Guitar Lessons #8: Introducing the II-V-I Progression

in #jazz6 years ago

In jazz, the II-V-I progression is the building blocks for so many jazz standards. In the key of C Major, that refers to Dmin7 G7 Cmaj7. It's important to learn how to play the chord voicing and an accompanying arpeggio shape. Here's one way to play this:
Dmin7 G7 CMaj7 Chord Voicings and Arpeggio Shapes.jpg

Practice Tips

  1. Learn to play each chord voicing
  2. Learn to play the arpeggio shape
  3. Play the chord voicing and then the arpeggio shape
  4. Record the chord voicing and play the arpeggio shape while playing back the chord voicing. This is a great way to learn to hear the sound of the arpeggio against the chord.

If you try these out, please feel free to record a short video of you playing it & include the link in the comments section. I'm quite curious to see if anyone will participate & it would be cool to really know that this lesson was helpful.

Thanks again and see you in a future post! :)
