Traditional Japanese Gate and Garden 【Beautiful Japan #21】

How would you like to have one of these suckers in front of your house?

These traditional gates sure are nice. Expensive, though, so only wealthier houses have them. Notice how full and overflowing the yard is. Japanese yards are more gardens than yards, usually packed with a variety of flowers and trees so that something is always in bloom. They are quite lovely, but do require a lot of maintenance.

Many newer houses are built more in the Western style and often have such a small yard (if any) that any kind of gate and wall becomes impractical, so I suppose these might be disappearing in the future. But for the moment at any rate, if you visit Japan you will see these in front of many traditional houses.
