Terraced Houses

Continuing with the Ireland theme my entry for @juliank's and @photocontests street photography contest is this photo of the terrace of houses in Harbour Road, Bantry.

Their bright colours are so cheerful, even on a grey and misty day such as the day I arrived there.

On this particular day we had more luck with the weather though and it was blue skies and warm.

I'm not sure if the view still looks like this because, since I was there a 20-berth marina on a quayside pontoon has been built. In fact they were just getting underway with that when I visited.

such a lovely street...maybe there is something to cheery colors are good in dreary climates. I'm thinking Iceland or Finland. Versus the adobe of the southern climates. Too philosophical for a Friday?

Friday's not the problem @steven-patrick but it is past my bed time! 😂

Lovely buildings, reminds me of little villages on the Isle of Skye! :)

Ah. I shall have to see if my partner has any pictures of streets on Skye @seanreilly. I've not been there myself. just viewed from across the water. 😁

That's a very Irish looking place. Reminds me somewhat of Waterford. Lovely bright colours. I haven't been to Eire' in years. I must try and get over there soon. Beautiful photo @gillianpearce

Yeah. I'd like to go back again @molometer. We didn't make it to Waterford but I would like to go there too. 😊

It is a pretty little city (oldest in Ireland) if you can ignore the industrial section.

I didn't realise it was a city @molometer let alone the oldest in Ireland.

I thought it was a town. (embarrassed emoticon goes here)

But I did manage to ignore the industrial section. I didn't even know there was one so I must have done so pretty well. 😊

I've never really understood why houses get painted muted or neutral colors on the outside. On the inside, it makes some sense because you can end up combining a bunch of colors if you're not careful, and having some neutrality works.

But all the homes here in the cul de sac are browns, or darker greens or greys or blues. Ours used to be salmon colored, that looked a little more like pink or orange depending on the light, because I wanted to stand out. Now, it's kind of light peanut butter color, with chocolate trim around the doors and dark red jam doors. A little less glaring than before, but still brighter, especially when the sun is out.

On the inside we had all egg shell for the walls, but we got that changed to mango colored and what they call chai for the ceilings, which is another off white.

I hope the marina didn't totally block the view of the homes you had.

that reminds me of something else I've never really understood @glenalbrethsen and that is why, when winter arrives and many days are dark and drab, clothes seem to go the same way.

Most winters the main colours in the shops are black, grey, beige and red and then in summer the brighter colours come out again.

I like to buy emerald green and turquoise and other bright colours but it's really hard to find warmer clothes in them. Mind you, it has to be the right year to find them in summer too. 😊

I think there's a premium price paid on bright cheerful colors. I'm not sure why, at least not now. Maybe in the past it was harder to create certain pigments, so the price would go up, but now, everything is pretty much created artificially, so it makes little sense. Yet, you'll see more cars that are drab colored than you'll see the bright stand out kind. It's just weird.

With the clothes, I wonder if it has to do with heat absorption. I don't know what difference it would make in the winter time with lighter colored clothing made out of warm material, but brighter colors in the summer time are supposed to absorb heat less.

It's probably mostly a psychological thing. Winter brings darker days so darker clothes. I don't know. You'd think you'd want something to cheer you up during those months. :)

You'd think you'd want something to cheer you up during those months.

Yep. That's my thinking exactly @glebalbrethsen.

We have some quite bright cars here at the moment. Bright blue is all the rage. I'd quite like one! 😂

These houses look very cute and fun. They look like toy houses.

They do a bit @madlenfox. i agree! 😁

I love to see colorful buildings when I visit overseas, there is something so cheery about them.

Me too @sunscape. There were some lovely ones in the seaside towns in Cornwall we visited earlier this moth. 😊
