Make Windows 10 Home Faster And Safer - 1 of 8 parts.

in #howto6 years ago (edited)

Hard core gamers will already know how to squeeze every bit of performance from their PCs and this series is designed for the less adventurous users. Making the PC faster and safer takes some patience and time but does save effort and anxiety in the long run. Like quality control, you don't know you need it until you stop using it.

Part 1 Clean up and update your PC.

You must have administrator access to complete this task.

In the box on the bottom left of the screen marked 'Type here to search' type in 'Update' and press the Enter key.
Update your PC to the latest version of Windows 10. When you check for updates your PC will also search for the latest device drivers. Allow plenty of time for this as it can take several hours. Make sure your PC is connected to the mains and do not turn it off until completion.
After a successful update reboot your PC several times at 5 minute intervals, this will ensure that all the updates have stabilized. You may find that the update has changed your settings but we will be addressing this later.

Although the settings screen has facilities for cleaning out unwanted files there is a one stop app that will clean out everything.
In the box on the bottom left of the screen marked 'Type here to search' type in 'Disk Cleanup' and press the Enter key.
Select the drive that you want to clean, then OK. (optional).
Select Clean up system files..
Select the drive that you want to clean, then OK. (optional).
In the dialogue box select the file types you want to delete, do not select empty file types as this will slow down the process. If you have a previous installation these files will show for deletion. Select OK.
In the message that appears, select Delete files. Deletion may take some time if there is a lot of rubbish.

Many experts say that cleaning the registry does not improve performance and may actually cause problems. Don't waste money or time on registry cleaners. If you use 'free' software you are possibly the product not the customer and your data will be mined for sale to third parties.

List of parts in this series.

1. Clean up and update your PC.
2. Remove unwanted apps and defrag the hard disk.
3. Creating a User Data volume (optional)
4.  Setting up your User Data volume.
5.  Separating Administration Permissions From User Permissions.
6. Tuning For Performance.
7. Tuning System Settings.
8. Security.
