2019 Pepper Season - Part 2

in #homesteaders5 years ago

Welcome to my 2019 Pepper Season

Well it's been 3 weeks now since my first pepper post of the season. So it's time for an update!

Failed Germinations

I've not had much success with the rest of my seeds I was germinating. They did end up drying out a couple times during the grow which maybe where part of my trouble lies. The seeds we're not all stored the as best as they could have been either I'm sure that and the fact that most of them are a few years old now decreases their viability.

Since I needed the space in my germination container I decided to toss the old seeds in some dirt for the old fashioned way of germination. I also added a couple fresh ones of each variety into the dirt with the old ones so hopefully I will end up with some of these super hot varieties that did not pop yet.

Now to just seal them up like a greenhouse and put them on the heat mat.

New Species Started

Here are some of the new ones I'll be starting, they're not as hot of varieties so they should be easier to germinate and grow a bit quicker generally.

Brazilian Starfish, Douce D'Espange

Purple Bell, Banana, Jalapeno

Grenada Seasoning Pepper, Paprika

The Seedlings

Lots of success with the Jamaican Red Mushroom Peppers, we've got 12 of them going but the only other thing I've had success with so far is one Orange Habanero. It is the very small one in the middle on the left, growing very slowly. THey can be very difficult when they're this small so I'll have to pay extra attention to make sure it doesn't get over watered or under watered.

Thanks for checking out my post and as always keep Blazin on Steemians!

Nice!! Peppers are great to grow and to eat :)
I've got 42 Sweet 100 tomato sprouts going now! Hoping to have a dozen or so adult plants to go out on the sunny patio in a few weeks. I think I may hold off on peppers this year, but I've got some seeds saved that I'll grow out soon, maybe next year :)

Awesome! Thanks!

You're really into your peppers! I usually do kind of a seed viability test with my old pepper seeds by planting them thickly in repurposed long shallow trays that have a lid - the type you buy fresh herbs in. This saves space on the heat mat and soil when I do them like this plus they can start growing a bit and less stress when I replant them for I take a clump of soil around their roots when I plant them into their regular 1 '' pots.

We are also running our fortnightly competition for steem rewards, where you can explore a plant medicine. This fortnight's plants are mullein, ginseng and alder... Plus a wild card where you can choose your own! Find out more Here
