Homemade Syrup, Chocolate milk, and Chunky Fruit Sauce! Variations of one EASY Recipe! ♥
No more buying that flavored corn syrup from the stores guys!! Making your own simple syrup for pancakes, (or chocolate milk!), is super easy!
I haven't bought syrup from the store in years.
(Well, unless you count REAL maple syrup, but that is a whole different thing! I can't buy it very often though, since it is very expensive!)
This simple syrup comes with several variations.
When it is to be used by the kids for pancakes or waffles, I just make a simple syrup without additional ingredients. It has a nice flavor on its own, since I use unrefined sugar to make it with. I wouldn't recommend doing this with processed white sugar.
You can also add cocoa powder at the beginning to make an excellent chocolate syrup, (like I did today), which is great for chocolate milk, hot cocoa, coffee, or anything else that needs some chocolate!
Another way to make this is with fruit!! You can add chopped fruit to the mix at the beginning to make a chunky fruit sauce! This is delicious also!
Without further ado, here is how you make it!
Ingredients:
optional:
As you can see, there are many ways to do this!
First, dump your sugar into a saucepan. (Or a large pot if you are like me and are afraid of things boiling over! I have a knack for making things boil over...)
At this time, you may add the cocoa powder as well, or the fruit and/or spices of your choice.
This is a forgiving recipe! Go ahead and experiment and play around with it!
If you added cocoa powder, give it a good mix at this time to make sure it doesn't separate and get clumpy when you add water...
Add the cup of water and mix well. Go ahead and turn the heat on your stove on and mix until the sugar is dissolved. You want to bring this to a boil.
When it comes to a rolling boil, turn the heat down to a fast simmer and set your timer for three minutes.
When your timer dings, remove from heat and mix in the extracts of your choice, if you like. It will seem a little thin, but don't worry, it thickens as it cools.
@SnekLady approves!
When it has cooled off, go ahead and pour into the container of your choice and pop it in the refrigerator!
It will keep for quite a long time, BUT it may begin to crystallize after a week or so. If this happens, you can let your goofy kids eat the crystallized chunks on their pancakes, or reheat and dissolve them back into syrup.
That, my friends, is how you make your own syrup. It is easy, you can't really mess it up, and it is FAST.
Beginning to end, it only takes about 5 minutes to make, maybe an extra minute or two if you are chopping fruit. I don't know about you, but with my crazy life, anything I can homemake in a short amount of time is a winner!
This morning's batch of chocolate syrup was immediately put to use by my munchkins as chocolate milk! Needless to say, it was delicious! ♥
Thanks for dropping by! I hope you found this recipe helpful!

Ohhh this looks nice!! Jaggery would be a great one too! Nowadays I've been using raw palm sugar syrup for cooking instead of white sugar, it's not as sweet and healthier too, yums!
Good idea! I love using healthy, natural sweeteners. We do honey and stevia as well! Great stuff!
Will have to give this a try! Although, we still have maple syrup....
Well, you can't really beat maple syrup! ♥
It is pricey though, so this is great, especially for those kiddos who are very generous in their syrup application. ;)
ah yes... pancakes, swimming in syrup... that's what parents are for... to mop it up afterwards!
Wow, great idea! I had never thought of making chocolate syrup. I do make simple syrup, for more adult recipes. This is great, I will be making it soon, thanks!
Thanks!! It is super easy to play around with and make flavors for different occasions. I like putting it in my coffee personally. ;)
I know my girls are going to want to try this and I surely will encourage them to do so, thanks for sharing.
Great! I hope they enjoy! ♥
Wow, that looks amazing! I could eat the whole thing right now haha
