Jargon, shortcuts, verbiage & weird words on Steemit
Users
Let's focus with naming all the slang word for the different kind of users. There is plenty of that. Some names are related to our SP level, others to the function we are having on the platform. Sources of the photos couldn't be included in the table, so you will find them in the end of this publication. All the pictures are on CC licence.
Users' names - gathered SP
Jargon | Meaning |
---|---|
Newbie/toddler | The person who just joined the platform. Their reputation is still low, the earnings basically don't exist yet and whole (or almost whole) SP is delegated to them. Different users and communities name different users a toddler. In Steemit Nursery it's the name booked for the users who registered less than one month ago, while some other Steemians use "Newbie" or "Toddler" as the synonyms of "Redfish" |
Redfish/Plankton | The user with a maximum of 50 SP (0-50 SP). Only non-delegated SP is counted while calling the users with one of the sea creatures. The voting power of redfish is worth less than 0.01 USD |
Minnow | The user with 50 - 500 SP. Only non-delegated SP is counted while calling the users with one of the sea creatures. The voting power of the minnow depends on STEEM price, but usually reaches 0.01 - 0.10 USD |
Dolphin | The user with 5 000 - 50 000 SP. Only non-delegated SP is counted while calling the users with one of the sea creatures. Some steemians like to call themselves "double dolphin" (with 10k SP), "triple dolphin (15k SP), etc. The voting power of dolphins is usually between 0.10 USD and 1.00 USD Currently we have a bit less than 1300 users who reached the dolphin level |
Orca | The user with 50 000 SP to 500 000 SP. Just like with dolphins, non-delegated SP is counted and people call themselves double, triple orca, and so on. The voting power of orcas is between 1.00 USD and 10.00 USD Currently there are 276 orcas on the platform. Only 19 of them are not using the bid bots. The most popular orcas are all the booming support accounts and steemcurator03 |
Whale | The most powerful users with more than 500 000 SP and votes worth more than 10.00 USD. Currently, there are 33 whales, including steemcurator01, steemcurator02, and xeldal - the only three whales that are not delegating to bid bots. |
Users' names - function
Jargon | Meaning |
---|---|
Country representative | All of the biggest national communities have their own country representatives. That's the users who are responsible for the promotion of Steemit in their countries, helping new users to adapt, solving any problems Steemit-related, answering questions, and making reports for the Steemcurator team. |
Witness | People who are mining the new STEEM. Every user can become the witness but they have to be selected in voting before. You can read more about the witnesses in this post |
Bidboter | Person who use bid bots, like upvu, tipu or nutbox.mine to increase their income. Using bid bots is against of proof-of-brain because it guarantees the income, no matter what is the quality of publication, so bidboters are often disliked by writers. Currently over 80% of orcas and whales are bidboters, while the percentage of dolphins using bidbots is around 50%. As the bid bots are working well only if you already have a big amount of SP, there is not much minnows who use them. |
Mosquito | Person who works unethically and share plagiarized content or copyrighted photos. Mosquitos are hunted by Mosquito Squisher community with endplagiarism and endingplagiarism04 as the current leaders |
Writer/blogger | Person who earns mostly by publishing content on Steemit. By publishing the posts, we all are becoming writers. |
Curator | Person who earns mostly by upvoting interesting content of other users. To earn satisfying money by becoming the curator, you need at least the orca status |
Other words worth knowing
Other presented words and shortcuts are not necessarily the jargon, but the new users may not know them, so let me quickly explain them to you:
Word | Meaning |
---|---|
SP | Steem Power. More Steem Power we have, more powerful our account is. |
SC | steemcurator team. You may also find SC1 or SC01 shortcuts that refer to steemcurator01 |
STEEM/TRX/SBD | Three coins of Steemit. READ HERE to learn more about STEEM/SBD or HERE to learn more about TRX |
Power-up | Increasing your own Steem Power. Read about it HERE |
Club5050/club75/club100 | Three programs of investing in our own SP, that increase the chance for booming support or steemcurator support . You can read more about them HERE |
Delegation | Borrowing our SP to other users or communities. It brings many profits to us. You may read about those profits and the procedure HERE |
NSFW | "not safe for work" = all the content that can be inappropriate to watch by kids or "in your workplace". That would include nudity, violence, political incorrectness etc. |
Curation trail | Automatization of your upvotes, authorization to follow with the upvotes selected user or community account. Read about it here |
spud4steem | Special event organized monthly. That day every steemian is making the power-up hoping to win delegation rewards. It's organized by kiwiscanfly |
steemit oscars | Monthly awards for the communities and best users organized by papi.mati in Promo Steem community |
List of active communities | The complete list of active communities organized in the first days of the new month by papi.mati. As the searcher on the website does not work correctly, it's one of the very few places where all the communities can be searched. |
Reputation | That weird number next to your nickname in your profile. Reputation grows each time someone votes for you and each level is ten times more difficult to reach than the previous. High reputation is the best way to recognize the greatest writers. More about the reputation you can read here |

Up until now the reputation part of steemit is what is really weird to me. Even though sapwood tried explaining it in one of his lectures last season and how it grows when you are upvoted it still looks complicated to me.
Well maybe I don't like it because it involves a lot of mathematics and stuff but its still so weird.
Thanks for sharing.
counting it is difficult, indeed. The simplified explanation is that it grows with the upvotes and each level is ten times more difficult to achieve than the previous, so climbing up is getting slower with time.
And yes, it's too much math :D
Nice work 👍👍
Thank you!
Waoooooow
