The frontal canon of a human face / El canon frontal de un rostro humano (#club100)

Hi friends!

(1) In the same way as we did in the previous post, we start by drawing a circumference and then drawing ellipses on both sides to define the width of the face.
Notice here that the ellipses drawn are larger than those drawn in the previous lesson. This is very important because this is how it is defined if the face will be round or more elongated.
Drawing a horizontal line above and another one below on the ellipses, then dividing it into two equal parts we obtain the portions that allow us to establish the location of the forehead, the location of eyebrows, the base of the nose and finally the lower third, the chin.

(2) By dividing the face in two horizontally we obtain the location of the eyes.
Here you can divide the front of the face into three, as shown in the drawing to get the size and separation of the eyes, and the width of the nose.
Try always to establish geometric relationships between the elements that make up the face. You will see that there is a relationship of harmony that is related to the Fibonacci number. Maybe we'll see this later.

(3) Another way to determine the width of the face is to lengthen the division into thirds by one on both sides, thus obtaining the face divided into fifths. Or on the contrary, by dividing the width of the face into five equal parts horizontally, you can get the size of the eyes, and the width of the nose at its base.

Here, is the clean drawing.

Aquí tienes el dibujo limpio.

Now we can start drawing all the elements that make up the face.

As you can see in this sequence, I have drawn the face of an adult, young woman.
In the drawing, I have advanced only one side of the face so you can compare.
I also suggest that you compare this elongated female face with the one drawn in the previous lesson, which is a round male face.

A good guideline for the proportions of the face, but the faces of real people are far from any proportions and this makes them even more interesting))

Hi bambuka, thanks for your interest in my drawing lesson, I appreciate it.
The objective of these tutorials is to learn how to draw the ideal human face, based on the canon that took many years to develop by great artists who seek to portray a perfectly proportioned human body.
Why do it?
Because establishing a canon with ideal proportions and beauty helps us to observe with knowledge and allows us to have a point of comparison to better interpret what we see in a natural head.
The face of real people is undoubtedly more interesting, but it is even more interesting to be able to interpret them with knowledge.
Good artistic interpretation is based on the knowledge that study and observation give us, added to the ability that practice gives us.

Yes, I understand why canonical proportions of the face and body are needed. This is especially important for me in sculpture. I always first did the marking on the wooden billet in accordance with the proportions.
However, as I cut out, someone began to guide my hands ...
While maintaining the overall proportions, sometimes unexpected faces and figures turned out :))

But you're right, you always need a starting point and a point of comparison. Thank you for this lesson.

Every face is different maybe that is also good, for practicing we can draw the circumference of face but also the eyes, nose and mouth in any sizes and form :)

Sure! The canon is a help, not a restriction.
