Powerup | #club100 | Hunting for shadows in the ruins of Belle Mare, Mauritius (#steemexclusive / 9 photos)
The island of Mautitius was founded on the production of sugar. The Dutch were the first to settle on the island and started to colonize the island. Sugar was grown at the plantations all around the island.
This is what remains of one of the old factories. It was built in 1820 and closed down in 1875. My plan was to go there to take photos. Even it was late in the afternoon the sun was strong casting shadows. Besides taking photos from the outside of the ruins, I alos focused on the shadows inside the walls.
More than 100 years ago, there were about 90 sugar factories. The vast majority are discontined. Sugar canes are grown to a much lesser extent today. This is due to several things such as. prizes and competitions. If you drive around the island, you will see there are still lots of ruins. This ruin at Belle Mare is huge and quite a facintating to wander around.
