El dispositivo se encontraba sumergido a unos diez metros en el océano, a doscientos kilómetros al oeste de la costa del continente, a su alrededor una burbuja de vacío, de unos pocos milímetros lo separaba de todo lo que le rodeaba, mientras un casi inapreciable vórtice hacia girar el agua a su alrededor a una muy baja velocidad.

Las moléculas del agua y el suelo se arremolinaban, mientras poco a poco eran absorbidas al vacío que rodeaba al mecanismo, para luego ser absorbidas por éste, que, por algún aun desconocido proceso, las transformaría en axiones, partículas que, completamente incapaces de interactuar con todo lo que las rodeaba, salían expedidas al espacio a gran velocidad, para luego ajearse del planeta.

―Las estimaciones indican que el nivel oceánico del planeta ha descendido en un treinta por ciento, debido a la acción del mecanismo ―explicó el teniente Raymond Córdoba, delegado militar en la expedición a la superficie del planeta ―. Literalmente el mecanismo está desintegrando el planeta, afortunadamente para las criaturas que viven aquí, cayó en el océano y ha estado absorbiendo el agua, porque si hubiese caído en tierra estaría devorando la atmósfera.

―¿Descenderemos a las proximidades del artefacto? ―preguntó el doctor Simeone, quien estaba sentado en la primera fila de la cabina de pasajeros de la nave.

―No, estaremos sobre la superficie del océano, mientras los robots despliegan una barrera de contención a su alrededor, para luego levantarlo y remolcarlo fuera del planeta, vigilaremos que no hagan nada equivocado ―respondió Córdoba.

La nave ingresó a la atmósfera y sobrevoló el continente, a través de una proyección, sus ocupantes, pudieron ver el aspecto de la superficie del planeta, tapizada de yerbajos de tonalidades naranja y roja, que se mecían agitados por la brisa que soplaba desde el océano, que se extendía a la distancia frente a ellos.

Después de cinco minutos de empezar a sobrevolar el océano, se detuvieron en medio de la nada, a su alrededor sólo se podían ver kilómetros y kilómetros de agua, cuatro naves más pequeñas que los acompañaban se sumergieron y empezaron a transmitir imágenes subacuáticas, en las que se podía ver el mecanismo y sus iluminados anillos, moviéndose oscilantes arriba y abajo a su alrededor.

Las naves robot se posicionaron a pocos metros sobre el dispositivo, en los cuatro vértices de un imaginario plano cuadrado, que abarcaba toda su superficie, luego, cada una de ellas emitió un intenso haz de luz azul que pareció conectarlas con la que estaba situada a su izquierda, formando un cuadrado con las naves robot en sus esquinas, para luego proyectarse para dibujar un cubo que abarcó todo el dispositivo y el volumen de agua y suelo a su alrededor.

―La barrera ya está desplegada, ahora iniciará la elevación ―dijo Córdoba.

Tras decir esto, las naves empezaron a elevarse y con ellas el cubo del que eran vértices, trayendo con sigo el mecanismo y todo lo que le rodeaba y dejando un gran agujero cuadrado en el fondo oceánico, justo donde antes estaba situado.

Lentamente el cubo se elevó, hasta emerger del mar frente a la nave que transportaba la expedición, donde la coraza superior se replegó, dejando entrar la luz de la estrella de aquel mundo, a través de una delgada película de polímero transparente que mantenía afuera la atmósfera del planeta.

La nariz de la nave se inclinó hacia adelante, a la vez que las filas de asientos de la cubierta de pasajeros se inclinaban hacia atrás para acomodar a sus ocupantes y permitirles ver cómo, el cubo que contenía al mecanismo, emergía y se elevaba en el aire, mientras era seguido por la nave que ocupaban.

Las naves robot transportarían el dispositivo lejos del planeta, hasta posicionarlo en una ubicación que fue considerada segura, al replegar la barrera el agua contenida rápidamente se solidificó en diminutos cristales que permanecieron flotando a su alrededor formando una tenue nube que brillaba iluminada por las luces de las naves.

Mientras los investigadores observaban el dispositivo a través de su gigantesca ventana, una señal era recibida por el sistema de comunicaciones de la nave.

―Capitán, hemos recibido una señal desconocida en la banda laser ―indicó el operador de comunicaciones del puente.

―¿Cuál es su origen? ―preguntó el capitán.

―El artefacto señor ―respondió el operador.

The device was submerged about ten meters into the ocean, two hundred kilometers west of the coast of the continent, around it a bubble of vacuum, a few millimeters long, separated it from everything around it, while an almost imperceptible vortex made the water spin around it at a very low speed.

The molecules of the water and the soil swirled around it, while little by little they were absorbed into the vacuum that surrounded the mechanism, to be later absorbed by it, which, by some still unknown process, would transform them into axions, particles that, completely incapable of interacting with everything around them, would be sent out into space at great speed, to later be ejected from the planet.

-The estimations indicate that the oceanic level of the planet has descended in a thirty percent, due to the action of the mechanism - explained lieutenant Raymond Cordoba, military delegate in the expedition to the planet's surface -. Literally the mechanism is disintegrating the planet, fortunately for the creatures that live here, it fell into the ocean and has been absorbing the water, because if it had fallen on land it would be devouring the atmosphere.

-Will we descend to the vicinity of the device? -asked Dr. Simeone, who was sitting in the front row of the ship's passenger cabin.

-No, we will be on the surface of the ocean, while the robots deploy a containment barrier around it, and then lift it and tow it off the planet, we will watch that they do nothing wrong, -answered Cordoba.

The ship entered the atmosphere and flew over the continent. Through a projection, its occupants were able to see the appearance of the planet's surface, upholstered in orange and red grasses, which swayed in the breeze blowing from the ocean, which extended in the distance in front of them.

After five minutes of starting to fly over the ocean they stopped in the middle of nowhere. Around them only miles and miles of water could be seen, four smaller ships accompanying them dived and started to transmit underwater images, in which one could see the mechanism and its illuminated rings, moving up and down around them.

The robot ships were positioned a few meters above the device, in the four vertices of an imaginary square plane, which covered all its surface, then, each one of them emitted an intense blue light beam that seemed to connect them with the one located on its left, forming a square with the robot ships in its corners, to then project itself to draw a cube that covered all the device and the volume of water and soil around it.

-The barrier is already deployed, now it will start the elevation, -said Córdoba.

After saying this, the ships began to rise and with them the cube of which they were vertices, bringing with them the mechanism and everything around it and leaving a large square hole in the ocean floor, just where it was before.

Slowly the cube rose, until it emerged from the sea in front of the ship carrying the expedition, where the upper shell folded back, letting in the light of the star of that world, through a thin film of transparent polymer which kept out the atmosphere of the planet.

The nose of the ship leaned forward, and the rows of seats on the passenger deck leaned back to accommodate the occupants and let them see how the cube containing the mechanism emerged and rose into the air, while it was followed by the ship they occupied.

The robot ships would transport the device away from the planet, until it was positioned in a location that was considered safe. When the barrier was retracted, the water contained quickly solidified into tiny crystals that remained floating around it, forming a tenuous cloud that shone illuminated by the lights of the ships.

As the researchers watched the device through its giant window, a signal was received by the ship's communications system.

-Captain, we've received an unknown signal in the laser band, -said the bridge communications operator.

-What is its origin? -the captain asked.

-The device, sir -responded the operator.
