―Hemos militarizado el puente que conduce al sector, sólo el equipo científico y los militares tenemos acceso ―explicó el doctor Benjamín Ríos ―. Llegaremos a una estación orbital que fue colocada provisionalmente.

―¿Hace cuanto tiempo fue descubierto el artefacto? ―preguntó un de los investigadores provenientes de Palas, un individuo moreno, calvo como una pelota y con un implante neural y óptico, que asemejaba a un par de gafas de piloto de competencias.

―Una de las sondas de exploración hizo la detección hace un par de meses y el paquete de datos fue recibido la semana pasada en la estación de monitoreo del puente ―explicó Benjamín.

―¿Cuántos planetas habitados hay en el sector? ―preguntó otro de los investigadores, un joven delgado de unos dos metros diez de altura, de tez amarillenta y abundante cabello negro.

―Aparte del que nos compete, ninguno que sepamos, es un sector recién explorado y casualmente el artefacto se encuentra en el primer planeta habitable hallado ―respondió Benjamín ―. Es un planeta rocoso de uno coma tres masas de Heracles, su gravedad es muy similar a la que estamos acostumbrados y la atmósfera respirable.

―¿Qué tipos de formas de vida han encontrado? ―preguntó una joven de cabello largo y figura esbelta, con una expresión exaltada en su rostro.

―Sólo vegetal y animales microscópicos, son basados en carbono y tienen estructuras celulares similares a las nuestras, poseen ácidos nucleicos de triple hélice y con seis nucleótidos ―respondió Benjamín, con una expresión de impaciencia en su rostro ―. Pero nada de eso es lo que nos interesa. El artefacto puede estar en medio del espacio interestelar, como el otro, y seguir siendo igual ―continuó claramente molesto ―. Esto es lo que nos interesa.

Tras decir estas palabras, la proyección tras él, que anteriormente estuvo mostrando imágenes de cartas estelares y del planeta que era su destino, mostró un dispositivo que se les hizo conocido, pero a diferencia de aquel, que para ellos era familiar, este mostraba dos anillos iluminados que se movían lentamente de forma excéntrica, lo que parecía indicar que estaba en funcionamiento.

―Este es el dispositivo ―dijo Benjamín, señalando innecesariamente la proyección ―. Aparentemente es igual al que se encuentra enclavado en una roca, en medio de la nada en el sector AD2322, pero este está funcionando.

―Es exactamente igual al Mecanismo de Fidias ―dijo nuevamente, el mismo joven amarillento que había hablado con anterioridad.

―Gracias por hacer notar lo obvio, doctor Wu ―respondió Benjamín ofuscado ―. En las inmediaciones del planeta, los niveles de materia oscura son mucho mayores a los de los alrededores.

―Pero se suponía que esto hacía lo inverso, consumía materia oscura ―dijo Wu, sin prestar atención al anterior desaire de Benjamín.

―Eso es lo que se creía, pero al parecer no es así ―respondió ―. Está haciendo todo lo contrario, está consumiendo lentamente la materia del planeta, y emitiendo axiones.

―Cuanto tiempo se cree que tiene ahí. En el caso del que ya conocíamos, su edad no ha sido posible de estimar ―dijo el investigador del implante óptico.

―Se cree que puede tener al menos veinte mil años en el planeta, por la cantidad de materia faltante y el ritmo al que produce axiones ―explicó Benjamín ―. Pero se piensa que su presencia en el planeta es relativamente nueva, está situado en un cráter, es posible que se haya estrellado ahí. Se cree que el evento puede coincidir con el inicio en la disminución de la materia del planeta.

―Entonces, ¿cuál es la idea a partir de aquí? ―preguntó el investigador del implante.

―La idea es, sacarlo del planeta, y tratar de averiguar su origen y como funciona, doctor Simeone ―respondió Benjamín ―. Y no se si está al tanto de las investigaciones más recientes sobre el Mecanismo de Fidias, pero un trabajo reciente fijó la edad de la roca que lo contiene en nueve mil millones de años, se cree que el mecanismo está en ella desde antes de que se solidificara, se cree que proviene de las proximidades del núcleo galáctico.

La nave Herón, que aguardaba a la autorización para ingresar al puente, inició su avance hacia la cristalina esfera, que parecía contener un espacio diferente al que la rodeaba, pronto estaría orbitándola, cada vez más cerca, hasta sumergirse en ella, para luego emerger en otra parte de la Vía Láctea. A bordo, un equipo de treinta científicos, provenientes de Palas y Dione, se aventuraban, a tratar de develar el funcionamiento de un dispositivo, probablemente más antiguo que cualquier otro objeto creado, antes descubierto.

-We have militarized the bridge that leads to the sector, only the scientific team and the military have access - explained Dr. Benjamín Ríos -. We will arrive at an orbital station that was placed temporarily.

-How long ago was the device discovered? -asked one of the researchers from Palas, a dark individual, bald as a ball and with a neural and optical implant, which resembled a pair of competition pilot's glasses.

-One of the scanning probes made the detection a couple of months ago and the data package was received last week at the bridge monitoring station -explained Benjamin.

-How many inhabited planets are there in the sector? -asked another of the researchers, a slim young man about six feet tall, with a yellowish complexion and abundant black hair.

-Apart from the one we are concerned with, none that we know of, is a newly explored sector, and coincidentally the device is on the first inhabitable planet found, -answered Benjamin-. It is a rocky planet of one point three Heracles masses, its gravity is very similar to what we are used to and the atmosphere is breathable.

-What kinds of life forms have you found? -asked a young woman with long hair and a slender figure, with an exalted expression on her face.

-Only plant and microscopic animals, they are carbon based and have similar cellular structures to ours, they have triple-helix and six-nucleotide nucleic acids -replied Benjamin, with an impatient expression on his face. But none of that is what interests us. The artifact may be in the middle of interstellar space, like the other, and remain the same - he continued, clearly annoyed -. This is what interests us.

After saying these words the projection behind him, which had previously been showing images of star charts and the planet which was their destination, showed a device which was familiar to them, but unlike the one, which was familiar to them, it showed two lighted rings moving slowly in an eccentric manner, which seemed to indicate that it was working.

-This is the device - said Benjamin, pointing unnecessarily to the projection-. Apparently it is the same as the one stuck on a rock in the middle of nowhere in sector AD2322, but this one is working.

-It is exactly the same as the Phidias Mechanism -said the same yellowish young man who had spoken earlier.

-Thank you for stating the obvious, Dr. Wu -replied Benjamin in disbelief -. In the vicinity of the planet, the levels of dark matter are much higher than in the surrounding area.

-But this was supposed to do the opposite, it consumed dark matter, -said Wu, not paying attention to Benjamin's earlier snub.

-That is what was thought, but apparently not, -he replied-. It is doing the opposite, it is slowly consuming the matter of the planet, and emitting axions.

-How much time he thinks he has there. In the case of the one we already knew, his age has not been possible to estimate -said the optical implant researcher.

-It is believed that it may be at least twenty thousand years old on the planet because of the amount of missing matter and the rate at which it produces axions -explained Benjamin-. But it is thought that it is relatively new to the planet, it is situated in a crater, it is possible that it has crashed there. It is believed that the event may coincide with the beginning of the planet's decline in matter.

-So what's the idea from here, -asked the implant researcher.

-The idea is to get it off the planet, and try to find out its origin and how it works, Dr. Simeone, -answered Benjamin. -And I don't know if you're aware of the latest research on the Phidian Mechanism, but a recent paper set the age of the rock that contains it at nine billion years, the mechanism is believed to be in it before it solidified, it's believed to come from near the galactic core.

The ship Heron, which was waiting for the authorization to enter the bridge, began its advance towards the crystalline sphere, which seemed to contain a different space than the one surrounding it. Soon it would be orbiting it, closer and closer, until it was submerged in it, and then it would emerge in another part of the Milky Way. On board, a team of thirty scientists from Palas and Dione ventured to try to reveal the workings of a device, probably older than any other created object previously discovered.
