After last night's "dramatic" derby between Inter and Milan, which sanctioned, ten minutes after the 90th minute, the qualification to the semifinals of the Coppa Italia of the team coached by Antonio Conte, thanks to a stunning goal on a free kick by Christian Eriksen, the quarter-finals table will be completed between today and tomorrow with the remaining matches, which see five teams from Serie A and one from Serie B involved.
While I'm writing, in fact, the second quarter-final between Atalanta and Lazio is being played, while tomorrow the match between Napoli and Spezia at the Diego Armando Maradona stadium will close the round; among them, however, it will be the turn of the champions of Italy of Juventus to play the match considered easier, the one against Spal, last in the standings of the highest championship ended last summer and that this year is looking for an immediate recovery in Serie A, being currently in the play-off zone, in fourth place.
The challenge, contrary to what one might think, is not unprecedented, since Juventus and Spal have already met three other times in the Cup Italia, always in Ferrara, and that the balance sees the Piedmontese ahead 2-1 in the count of victories; this evening, however, will be the first time that the two teams face each other in Turin and the prediction seems oriented quite clearly towards the passage of the round of Andrea Pirlo's team.
Be careful though, because what happened to Bayern Munich and Real Madrid this season, both eliminated from the national cup by teams of lower category, must serve as a stimulus for the Bianconeri, in order to avoid a relaxation that, together with the inevitable changes in the starting line-up, could favour even more the warrior spirit with which the guests will face the match.
While waiting to enjoy tonight's spectacle, however, let's relive together the three previous matches between the two teams, discovering forgotten or perhaps unknown protagonists, who once thrilled the fans just as hopefully the players of the two teams will do again this evening.
Spal v Juventus 4-1
(Ferrara, 31 May 1962)
In the edition that will always be remembered as the Coppa Italia of the Cinderellas, Juventus and Spal, teams that were going through a difficult time in the championship, near the bottom of the standings, faced each other in the semi-final in a single match, in the stadium of the city of Emilia.
The odds were clearly in favour of the Bianconeri, the defending Italian champions, coached by Carlo Parola, but the grit and desire to win of Ferrara soon became the determining factors of the match: With a quick one-two around the half-hour mark, the hosts made it 2-0, thanks to goals by Micheli and Dell'Omodarme, a young midfielder who had grown up in the youth teams of Juventus, and who also scored the 3-0 goal in the second half.
The guests lost their heads, seeing their only remaining goal of the season slip away, and also conceded the 4-0 goal on a penalty kick taken by Cervato, a defender at the time second only to Giacinto Facchetti in terms of goals scored.
The own goal by Muccini, a little more than ten minutes from the end, did not change the balance of the match; Spal was promoted to the final, which, however, would lose against Napoli, a team then playing in Serie B, while Juventus was also defeated by Mantova in the final for third place.
Spal v Juventus 1-4
(Ferrara, 6 January 1966)
The newly promoted Spal, able to eliminate in the previous rounds Pisa, Atalanta and Potenza, and Juventus, entered the competition only from this round (like the other three teams that finished in the first four places of the previous championship), face each other in the quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia, scheduled in a single match in the stadium of the team considered as the underdog.
The Bianconeri started well, crushing the opponents in their penalty area, and found the goal of the advantage shortly after the quarter of an hour, thanks to the striker Vincenzo Traspedini; soon after, however, the team coached by Heriberto Herrera began to slowly relax and suffered at the end of the first half the goal of the draw of the hosts, scored by Pezzato, in one of the very rare appearances of the defender from Veneto in the first team.
The players of Juventus became nervous, also because the goal of the opponents was scored in obvious offside, and in the second half the match became bad, with neither of the two opponents able to prevail over the other. The game goes to the extra time and the bianconeri, properly catechized by Herrera, find themselves again, going immediately in advantage with Menichelli at the 92nd minute and finding other two goals in counter-attack in the second additional time, again with Menichelli and with Leoncini.
Despite the fact that, with the victory, the Bianconeri felt they already had one and a half feet in the final, the Piedmontese team was eliminated in the semi-final by Catanzaro, able to win 2-1 in the match played in Turin.
Spal v Juventus 0-5
(Ferrara, 2 September 1973)
Having just returned to the Serie B, after a long period in the lower categories, Spal was included in the first preliminary round of the 1973/74 Coppa Italia together with Juventus, which it had to face on the second day. The game was still played in the summer, on a day that was destined to become historic for Italian sport, the day in which Felice Gimondi beat the heavily favoured Eddy Merckx in Barcelona to become cycling world champion.
Miracles sometimes happen, but on the turf of the Ferrara stadium everything went as predicted: the first half ended with a single goal advantage for the Bianconeri, signed by *Cuccureddu, but in the second half the men of Čestmír Vycpálek (the uncle of Zdenek Zeman, future coach of Roma and great accuser of the Bianconeri) went on the rampage, scoring three times with Anastasi and again with Cuccureddu.
From that day on, Spal had to wait 45 years to host Juventus again, but despite passing the qualifying round, they were ousted from the competition in the second round by losing in Palermo.

dopo il "drammatico" derby di ieri sera tra Inter e Milan, che ha sancito, dieci minuti dopo il novantesimo, la qualificazione alle semifinali di Coppa Italia della squadra allenata da Antonio Conte, grazie ad uno straordinaio goal su calcio di punizione di Christian Eriksen, il quadro dei quarti di finale si completerà tra oggi e domani con le restanti partite, che vedono impegnate cinque formazioni di Serie A e una di Serie B.
Mentre sto scrivendo infatti, sta andando in scena il secondo quarto di finale, quello tra Atalanta e Lazio, mentre domani chiuderà il turno la gara dello stadio Diego Armando Maradona tra Napoli e Spezia; tra di esse però, toccherà ai campioni d'Italia della Juventus lo scontro sulla carta più facile, quello contro la Spal, ultima in classifica nella massima serie conclusasi la scorsa estate e che quest'anno sta cercando un'immediata risalita in Serie A, trovandosi attualmente in zona play-off, al quarto posto.
La sfida, contrariamente a quanto si possa pensare, non è però inedita, dal momento che Juventus e Spal si sono già incontrate altre tre volte in Coppa Italia, sempre a Ferrara, e che il bilancio vede i piemontesi in vantaggio 2-1 nel computo delle vittorie; questa sera sarà tuttavia la prima volta che le due squadre si affrontano a Torino e il pronostico appare orientato pittosto nettamente verso il passaggio del turno della squadra di Andrea Pirlo.
Attenzione però, perchè quanto accaduto a Bayern Monaco e Real Madrid in questa stagione, entrambe eliminate dalla coppa nazionale da squadre di categoria inferiore, deve servire da stimolo per i bianconeri, al fine di evitare un rilassamento che, insieme agli inevitabili cambi nella formazione titolare, potrebbe favorie ancora di più lo spirito guerriero con il quale gli ospiti affronteranno la partita.
In attesa di godere dello spettacolo di questa sera però, andiamo a rivivere insieme i tre precedenti tra le due squadre, scoprendo protagonisti dimenticati o forse sconosciuti, che un tempo hanno emozionato gli appassionati proprio come si spera facciano i calciatori delle due squadre anche questa sera.
Spal-Juventus 4-1
(Ferrara, 31 maggio 1962)
Nell'edizione che verrà ricordata per sempre come la Coppa Italia delle cenerentole, Juventus e Spal, squadre che stavano attraversando un momento per nulla felice in campionato, a ridosso della parte bassa della classifica, si affrontano in semifinale in gara unica, nello stadio della città emiliana.
I pronostici sono nettamente dalla parte dei bianconeri, campioni d'Italia uscenti, allenati da Carlo Parola, ma la grinta e la voglia di vincere dei ferraresi diventano ben presto i fattori determinanti della partita: con un rapido uno-due intorno alla mezz'ora, i padroni di casa si portano sul 2-0, grazie alle reti di Micheli e Dell'Omodarme, giovane centrocampista cresciuto nelle formazioni giovanili della Juventus, giocatore in grado di realizzare, poco dopo la metà della ripresa, anche il goal del 3-0.
Gli ospiti perdono la testa vedendo sfumare definitivamente l'unico obiettivo stagionale rimasto, e subiscono anche la rete del 4-0 su calcio di rigore trasformato da Cervato, difensore all'epoca secondo solo a Giacinto Facchetti per il numero di goal realizzati.
L'autorete di Muccini, a poco più di dieci minuti dal termine, non sposta l'equilibrio della partita; la Spal viene promossa in finale, che tuttavia perderà contro il Napoli, formazione che allora militava in Serie B, mentre i torinesi verranno sconfitti anche dal Mantova nella finale per il terzo posto.
Spal-Juventus 1-4
(Ferrara, 6 gennaio 1966)
La neopromossa Spal, capace di eliminare nei turni precedenti Pisa, Atalanta e Potenza, e la Juventus, entrata per regolamento nella competizione solo da questo turno (come le altre tre squadre che hanno concluso nei primi quattri posti il campionato precedente), si affrontano nei quarti di finale della Coppa Italia, previsti in gara unica nello stadio della squadra considerata come sfavorita.
I bianconeri partono bene, schiacciando gli avversari nella loro area di rigore, e trovano il goal del vantaggio poco dopo il quarto d'ora, grazie all'attaccante Vincenzo Traspedini; dopo il vantaggio la squadra allenata da Heriberto Herrera comincia lentamente a rilassarsi e subisce allo scadere del primo tempo la rete del pareggio dei padroni di casa, segnata da Pezzato, in una delle rarissime apparizioni del difensore veneto in prima squadra.
I giocatori della Juventus si innervosiscono, anche perchè la rete degli avversari è stata segnata in evidente fuorigioco, e nel secondo tempo la partita diventa cattiva, con nessuna delle due avversarie in grado di prevalere sull'altra. Si arriva ai tempi supplementari e i bianconeri, catechizzati a dovere da Herrera, si ritrovano, andando subito in vantaggio con Menichelli al 92' e trovando altri due goal in contropiede nel secondo tempo supplementare, ancora con Menichelli e con Leoncini.
Nonostante che, con la vittoria, i bianconeri si sentissero già con un piede e mezzo in finale, la squadra piemontese verrà eliminata in semifinale dal Catanzaro, in grado di vincere 2-1 nelle partita disputata a Torino.
Spal-Juventus 0-5
(Ferrara, 2 settembre 1973)
Appena risalita in Serie B, dopo una lunga parentesi nelle categorie inferiori, la Spal viene inserita nel primo girone preliminare della Coppa Italia 1973/74 insieme alla Juventus, che deve affrontare alla seconda giornata. Si gioca ancora in estate, in un giorno destinato a diventare storico per lo sport italiano, quello n cui Felice Gimondi batte a Barcellona il super favorito Eddy Merckx, diventando campione del mondo di ciclismo.
I miracoli a volte accadono, ma sul prato dello stadio di Ferrara tutto va come pronostico: il primo tempo si conclude con un solo goal di vantaggio per i bianconeri, firmato da *Cuccureddu, ma nella ripresa gli uomini di Čestmír Vycpálek (lo zio di Zdenek Zeman, futuro allenatore della Roma e grande accusatore dei bianconeri) dilagano, trovando la rete tre volte con Anastasi e ancora con Cuccureddu.
Da quel giorno la Spal dovrà attendere 45 anni per ospitare di nuovo la Juventus, che tuttavia, nonostante il brillante passaggio del girone eliminatorio, verrà estromessa dalla competizione nel secondo turno perdendo a Palermo.
