Upon returning to the locker room at half-time, a firecracker launched from the Juventus curve hits the Torino goalkeeper, Castellini in the ear, forced to leave the game and be transported to the hospital. The goal of Bettega, twenty minutes from the end, arrives in a surreal atmosphere in which the victory at the table of the guests, destined to become Italian champions for the seventh time in their history with two points ahead of rivals of Juventus, is already taken for granted.

Reduci dalla sconfitta per 2-1 sul campo del Cesena della settimana prima, i campioni d'Italia della Juventus si prsentano al derby della ventitreesima giornata con tre punti di vantaggio sul Torino, la squadra al secondo posto della classifica. I granata hanno un feeling particolare con lo Stadio Comunale, nel quale fino a quel momento hanno vinto tutte le gare disputate in stagione, e aggrediscono subito i rivali, portandosi in vantaggio dopo appena due minuti. I bianconeri sembrano tramortiti dalla furia dei rivali e non riescono a reagire, subendo addirittura dopo pochi minuti la seconda rete, dopo un colpo di testa di Pulici.
Nel rientro negli spogliatoi all'intervallo, un petardo lanciato dalla curva bianconera colpisce all'orecchio il portiere del Torino, Castellini, costretto a lasciare la partita e ad essere trasportato in ospedale. E' la vittoria più larga della storia per il Torino, ma anche la più sofferta; i granata termineranno il campionato in settima posizione, quattro punti dietro la Juventus, terza.
