The cave house of the inhabitants of Matera [ENG-ITA]

in OCD4 years ago

Visiting Matera, I visited one of the many houses built in the Sassi caves of the city. In fact, until the mid-twentieth century, the inhabitants of the city resided in these lodgings, in hygienic-sanitary conditions certainly precarious and unsafe for the citizens themselves. In the caves, families all slept together in the same bed to preserve body heat. The humidity in the cave is very high, despite the current presence of a dehumidifier and I find it difficult to think how wet it was in the past.

Each cave had a corner dedicated to working animals, mostly donkeys, so that the owner could monitor the animal, reducing the possibility of cattle theft. Furthermore, the animals helped keep the bed where the shepherd often slept warm. But you can well imagine how living together with an animal and its excrements was not an ideal hygienic solution for a family with children.

The drinking water was collected by the rain through a collection system in large stone cisterns which was drawn through a well inside the house. The same water was also used for cooking and for watering the animals. The kitchen tools are authentic and it really left me to think about how the inhabitants managed to live with so little. Today if I break a dish, I throw it away and I easily buy another. In the past, dishes were small family treasures and when a dish was broken, it was not thrown away ... it was repaired ... This explains the scars seen on these dishes ...

Another peculiarity: the bread. The bread was home-made but used to be cooked in the city oven, turned on about a few times a week. However, each loaf of bread had to be marked with the owner's initials, otherwise the loaf was lost. For this reason each family had an iron mold with its own initials. The sight of this cave house really left me thinking about how difficult and hard life was a few decades ago while today everything seems easy and fast. There is indeed to meditate on our condition. We are very fortunate to live in this era of wellbeing but we should also learn how everything that is immediate today is actually the result of the effort and suffering of our ancestors.
