Hello to all on this wonderful day! I hope everyone is feeling well. This time I will be completing the
Achievement 3: Content Etiquette
so we can talk a little bit about plagiarism and how to avoid it in our beloved #steemit community. Stay with me so we can learn together following the guidance of our friend @cryptokannon!

What is plagiarism?

We can define plagiarism as the theft of intellectual property (work, words, ideas), in electronic, oral or handwritten form, in which someone else's is taken as their own without giving credit to the true author of what is referred to.

Simply put, it is defined as follows: "Plagiarism is presenting someone else's work or ideas as your own, with or without their consent, by incorporating it into your work without full acknowledgement. " Source

Today this is considered in many places to be a crime. In my opinion, it is a shameless act that we must avoid at all costs; we must be honest and respect the work of others, which surely took them effort to perform such work.

Next, to understand a little more about it, I will describe a little about the types of plagiarism that exist today.

Types of plagiarism

Direct Plagiarism

"Direct plagiarism is the word-for-word transcription of a section of someone else's work, without attribution and without quotation marks." Source

This type of plagiarism is easily identifiable. For example, extracting a textual phrase from a book and taking it as one's own without giving credit to the author of the book.

Self-plagiarism

"Duplicate publication, multiple publication, or redundant publication refers to publishing the same intellectual material more than once, by the author or publisher." Source

That is, taking one's own previously made work and using it again as if it were a new work. In a vivid example, for example, within our beloved #steemit, taking a previous post and republishing it as something innovative. Likewise, even if it doesn't involve someone else, it's dishonest.

Mosaic Plagiarism

"Mosaic Plagiarism occurs when a student deletes phrases from a source without using quotation marks, or finds synonyms for the author's language while keeping to the same general structure and meaning of the original." Source

In other words, paraphrase! Even if you change a word or two in the text or work, it will still have the same meaning and the same order of ideas, so you are still plagiarizing. Therefore, in Steemit, it is necessary to use your own ideas.

Accidental Plagiarism

"Accidental plagiarism occurs when a person neglects to cite their sources, or misquotes their sources, or unintentionally paraphrases a source by using similar words, groups of words, and/or sentence structure without attribution." Source

Plagiarizing accidentally, through ignorance or carelessness, is really unfortunate. That is why everyone in the community should be encouraged to know how to properly cite the source from which they have extracted any content that is not their own.

How to avoid plagiarism?

The correct way to avoid plagiarism is simply to cite the author of the work. This way you are giving him the credit he deserves for his work.

At Steemit, we rely on markdown to help us do this correctly.

  • When we cite content from a web page, it is necessary to specify the link to the page. For this we have the code that hides the link, making it more aesthetic and simple. I am talking about the , in simple words, [] (). Inside the square brackets will be the visible name of the link. Between the brackets will be the link that will be hidden. It will look like this.

  • On the other hand, we have the ">". With this symbol we can signify that the specific paragraph is being quoted. It is simply placed at the beginning of the first letter, and the text will look like this:

"It is impossible imagine a more nauseating spectacle than that of the plagiarizer (Edgar Allan Poe)." Source

We must join forces to end plagiarism. Our beloved #steemit community needs original, quality content to help it grow, and, in turn, all of us.

Let's create original content!

It is very important for a healthy coexistence in our steemit community that we read and understand the steemit etiquette, which you can read here. For my part, "I have read and understood the Steemit Etiquette on Steemit Community and will do my best to embrace them."
