Achievement 3 by @viczwa Task : Content Etiquette
Good Day
For my third task I will, undertake to explain plagiarism.
Plagiarism is the representation of another author's language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions as one's own
Source
In essence it is not the fact that you used someone else's research that is the problem but the fact that you did it without giving the original author recognition. The assumption created is that the work is your own. That is where the crime is.
Plagiarism is not a simple concept as I will seek to demonstrate as in other countries it is considered good practice to do it which causes confusion in the scholar fraternity. It is therefore vital that as creators on steemit we are well aware of the etiquette or "norm" when we create work, particularly if other people's work is found in ours.
Plagiarism can be categorised into 4 main classes
- Direct plagiarism: The verbatim use of someone else's text without reference to the original author.
- Mosaic plagiarism: Use of authors text that is paraphrased to have different wording but the same structure and idea without reference to the original author.
- Self plagiarism: Use of your own previous text in new text without reference to other authors you may have worked with.
- Accidental plagiarism: Use of someone's text and forgetting to reference the original author.
It is imperative that as authors we understand how important it is to show respect and recognition for other authors work. It should be mentioned that plagiarism is a crime punishable by law and infact one found guilty can face jail time.
I realise the importance of referencing and appreciate the skills and tools steemit is affording us to increase the quality of work.
