WHAT IS PLAGIARISM: Plagiarism is a piece of writing that has been copied from someone's else and is presented as being your own. Or taking someone's words or ideas as if they are your own.
Stanford defines plagiarism as the use without giving reasonable and appropriate credit to or acknowledging the author or source of another persons work. Plagiarism is also a representation of another person's language, ideas, thoughts, writing as ones own original work.
For example if someone finds out about an article in a book that suits his work, if he copied it and add to his own without citing the original author, it is an act of plagiarism. Also if someone copied something from internet and pasted it as his own without acknowledging the original author, it's also an act of plagiarism.
Plagiarism is a form of theft. By taking someone's idea or words and presenting it as your own means you are stealing someone else intellectual property. We need to stop plagiarism.
HOW DO WE AVOID PLAGIARISM: There are various ways to avoid it stop plagiarism.
- Cite your source ie credit the original author as text citation and reference list
- Paraphrase: paraphrase and quote from your sources
- Present your own ideas.
- Keep track of the sources you consult in your research
- Summarize in your own words
- Quoting: Take words directly from a source and integrate them directly in your writing.
WAYS TO DEAL WITH PLAGIARISM: There are some ways that can help on dealing with plagiarism.
- Present your own ideas the way you understand it.
- Have interest in your topic: once you are interested in the topic you are writing, plagiarism will be avoided
- Commit to doing your own work
- Give yourself enough time to research your work.
