Plagiarism is one of the common mistakes writers make in their writings. Many plagiarists falls victim of this offence unintentionally. Many do not know it is an offence, some mistakenly still fall into such error while some just chose to be intentional plagiarist.

The University of Oxford defines Plagiarism as "presenting someone else’s work or ideas as your own, with or without their consent, by incorporating it into your work without full acknowledgement."source

Writers are tempted to present ideas as theirs but this act is against the etiquette of any authorship community and attracts severe sanctions if identified. The steemit community is a community of authors or content creators which pride so much in the use of brain to create original contents. Any content that falls victim of plagiarism is not seen as original and can only bring harm to the community and it's reputation.
There are commonly two types of plagiarism when it comes to presenting ideas;

  • Word-for-Word Plagiarism: this is when ideas are copied directly word for word from another person's work without giving rightful credit to the owner of such work. You could be writing an article and in the process of your research you copied words directly be it definition, quote, paraphrase, illustration into your work without acknowledging the source of such idea; this is known to be plagiarism. An indicator for this could be having a number of the author's consecutive words in a row incorporated into your work. And this is exactly what plagiarism tools check when analyzing your writing.

How to fix Word-for-Word Plagiarism:
It is best to avoid such plagiarism but if need be the copied text should be placed in quotation marks ("") or use of the markup symbol (>) then followed by a link to the source of such work. A more scientific blog writing would demand to have the author's name and details of the writing spelt out in a bibliographic reference at the end of your blog.

For example this is no longer considered as plagiarism as the mark up symbol (>) has been used to differentiate the borrowed text from my own writing:

Plagiarism is about whether or not a work is properly cited while copyright infringement focuses on the use of the original work. While there is overlap between the two, they are far from one and the same.source

  • Paraphrasing Plagiarism: another type of plagiarism can be committed when writing other people's ideas in ones own words. Writing other people's ideas in your own words is known as paraphrasing. In this case we're not writing word for word but we kind of express the same idea in another comprehensive way without acknowledging the source of the idea.
    Paraphrasing Plagiarism would often occur when we wish to express an idea which is not derived from our own experience and not a common knowledge but particularly attributed to a particular person.

How do we fix Paraphrasing Plagiarism
The Paraphrasing Plagiarism can be fixed by avoiding a word for word plagiarism in the paraphrase and indicating the owner of such idea by stating his name as you begin the paraphrase and include a source reference link.

For example this has been paraphrased from a post from Plagiarism.org:
Plagiarism and Copyright infringement are two acts that shows an overlapping characteristics but very different. Copyright infringement checks the usability of an original work while plagiarism considers the proper citation of a work.source

Using other Images and other Illustration works
Images, Graphics, Illustrations, Charts belongs to their owners or publishers and most are even copyrighted. However before using any of such it is advisable to check for copyright which defines the terms of use of such materials. These terms must be followed strictly in order not to violate it's copyright. Materials published on public domains are for free use but to conform to writing etiquette, it is required to state the author and provide a link to the source.

Saving oneself from Plagiarism is as simple as making it explicitly known to your reader what's originally yours and what belongs to someone else in your writing.
