Achievement 3 by @benjamin09 Task: Content Etiquette.
What is plagiarism?
Plagiarism is when you take someone else's work or ideas and use them as your own without giving them any credit or mentioning them in any way.
Plagiarism is taking another person's work and claiming it is your own and that is a very bad act as you are claiming the ownership of another person's intellectual property. This is illegal and one can be sued to a legal court depending on the copyright laws placed on the stated work or text.
It is for this reason, that we have to always use citations to show the sources of the text or the sources of the image to give credit to the author for his work. With this in mind, we also have to take note of the fact that not all works are free to be used even if the source of the work is provided. Some authors have placed copyright on their works in order to prevent anyone from using the works. While other authors permit users to copy and use the work on the condition of crediting the author for the works.
There are also works that may be used only after being bought by the user.
There are several types of plagiarism:
- When you take someone's images or works without crediting them.
- When you self plagiarise your text or works by using them twice for commercial purposes.
We should always avoid plagiarism by quoting the text that was copied exactly and giving the source. Also, all paraphrased text should have the source of the original giving the author credit.
Most of the time, people usually go online and search for materials that might help them in their activities. When they do so, some do not give the authors of the information, the credit the deserve.
The person who copied the information or image is supposed to give a citation of the source of the information where the information or image comes from. When this link is given after the information, the reader of the now created information may use that link to know more about it from the original source post.
But there are two types of images to be used. One with creative licenses and the other with commercial licenses. When selecting images to use for posts on steemit, one should use the images which have the creative licenses because these images are free and dont have any financial obligations.
That's the end of my content etiquette post for my achievement 3.
