You are not slave of your genetic history

We gotta thank Gregor Mendel for establishing the foundation of classical genetics.

Genetics is the transfer of genes from parents to their offspring that is later shown in different traits like height, color, hair, and weight.

Mr. Mendel was proactive and experimented on pea plants to get different and desired traits.

Therefore he crossed one round yellow seed plant with one wrinkled green seed plant.

He wanted diversity in their shapes and colors.

The first generation had all the yellow round plants. Because of dominant alleles, which are present in the form of pairs of each chromosome.

Alleles can be dominant or recessive and involved in the physical structure/phenotype/appearance.

Here yellow round was the dominant allele and green wrinkled was the recessive allele.

However, when he crossed the offspring of the first generation he got different results:

Offsprings having:

  • Round and yellow(Original ancestors, dominant alleles both)
  • Round and green (recessive allele for color)
  • Wrinkled yellow(recessive allele for shape)
  • Wrinkled green (recessive alleles both)

He succeeded in getting different traits when he crossed seeds that were different.

He proposed his law: Mendel's law of Independent assortment.

In easy words, offspring weren't bound to their parent's genes forever. They were independent to show different traits in 2nd generation.

Humans took inspiration from him and started a crossing business in different communities.

We know what good genetics is. If you have good height, hair, and fair skin color then definitely you have good genes( as a matter of fact in Asia).

A family that has children of short or average height tends to find a cross with a person of good height to end the generation of dwarfs.

Those who have tanned children prefer to find a fair person to get offspring like snow white.

Speaking of Europe, they have a classic example of good genes.

A cross between a blonde with a black-haired person:
lady Diana and Prince Charles. They had this cross to get Diana's genes(beauty).

Charles was seen responding to an answer about whether William looked like him.

He answered: he is lucky enough not to.

Excuse my racism, I'm not saying this is wrong.

In fact, it's good to have a cross between people of different traits. It makes our immune system strong and prevents many diseases, which are seen in people having cross with the same traits.

For instance: in cousin marriages, people face diseases more often.

However, genetics is not just what you see in a person. It's not just what you get from your mother's womb. It's not just what your mother ate and did intellectually during her pregnancy.

It's also what you get from your environment after you are born.

It's Nature(gene) and also Nurture(environment)

Our genetic is how genes are passed to us.
Our nurture is how those genes are expressed in the future.

Here comes Epigenetics:

It is the phenomenon of how your behaviors and environment can cause changes that affect the way your genes work. Unlike mutations, epigenetic changes are reversible and don't change the sequence of DNA bases, but they can change how your body reads a DNA sequence.

It explains how early childhood experiences can modify gene expression that controls diseases and behavior problems in later life.

Scientists experimented on rats to see how maternal care after their pup's birth influences their genes.

There were two pups, one got licking and high grooming from his mother while another pup did get less grooming.

One had experienced love and bond with their mother in early life while the other didn't.

Many years later they saw its effect on their behavior and lifestyle.

The pup getting groomed had less stress, didn't binge eat which is a disorder, and was more calm, and happy in their life.

While the pup getting none sucked into life.

Epigenetics studied that there was a genomic change in the pup when he got maternal care. The receptor gene glucocorticoid which was inactive at the time of birth got activated when his mother licked him.

This GR gene controls development, metabolism, and immune responses which control diseases in the future.

Those with inactivated GR genes are more prone to stress and behavior issues.

You see Gene was there but it couldn't bring any change or good to that poor pup.

You don't have poor genes, you're just in a poor environment, and that changes how you look

In humans, those who don't get their parents' love, attention, and touch in early life become drug addicts in later life, commit suicide or develop autism.

In a classic Pakistani drama, Tanhaiyaan, the heroine Zara has anxiety issues and fear of the unknown she got from her mother, even when everything was going smoothly in her life.

This is how your mother's love can change your gene expression.

@mehwish-almas and @nafeela what do you think about it?

Sort:

Genetics is a very deep topic in itself. You have written about it well. It has both benefits and drawbacks.

I never delved into it deeply. But a few months ago, a child was born in a family after a cousin marriage, and the child had some physical problems. When they got a checkup done, the doctor said that it's because of the cousin marriage, and then the complication led to the divorce (meaning the boy divorced his wife saying that if one child is like this, then others will be born with defects too).

I feel that somewhere this is a matter of trust. Even though medical science has advanced so much that many treatments are possible, yet people still live with old thinking.

meaning the boy divorced his wife.

So heartbreaking, only if they had done some tests before their wedding rather than ruining their life now.

In my family, we also have a cousin marriage and their two children have died due to cancer of white blood cells in a matter of two months after their delivery.

They also have two healthy babies but he never considered to divorce her.

It's a matter of loyalty also.

Thank you Rashid for your visit:)

You are weclome :-)

only if they had done some tests before their wedding rather than ruining their life now.

Your point is valid. If some tests are done before marrying within the family, then many problems can be avoided later on. Because nowadays, the value of relationships is decreasing, and small issues lead to breakups.
Thanks for the nice and insightful responce to my comment.

My pleasure;)

You're right, we need more meaningful relations instead of shallow ones🙌

so you don't believe that monkeys and we have common ancestors. .... I think nurture affects our behavior and genetics impact physical features. Easy peasy!....but not epigenetics is something beyond simple understanding for me....I can give you my example and I expect a good answer from you. My mother was a very cool and calm lady. she had extra power to bear all the things that happened to her. The same thing transferred in me, but you can say it is double in power ,and now I bear all the unwanted situations without any word. I know this is my weakness, someone shouldn't be as cowardly as I'm . but I can't find any strength in me to resist, whenever I give a direct answer to anyone(mtlb thora badtameezi sa jo k zaroori bhi ho) I start feeling guilty.(⬅️ this is worst part of my life) im confused! is it my situation which made me what I'm today or is it the genes which double the power? or both cases boost each other.... P: S Mandalas 3 law of inheritance once remains a nightmare in Fsc. I guess you explained much better than my teachers at college. and , this is an amazing read enjoying the Asian families part.... The thing which I sort out through this post is that you are too good at connecting different facts and situations. this is a rare quality. I observe this only in Allam Talib Johri, maybe you know him.

Dear Mehwish,

i already feel that we are soul sisters because i can always relate to your situations.

Maybe it's the suffering that connect us.

For your situation: life humbles us in the most unexpected ways.

We are the product of our environment, if not genes we become what we have seen around us while growing up, like women shouldn't speak to atrocities.

In my opinion, one shouldn't be Allah miyan ki gaye to this extent.

In serious matters of life in which we have no control, we should remain silent when anyone tries to demean us, because karma is a very powerful thing.

Words are very heavy we shouldn't use them without using our brain.

mtlb thora badtameezi sa jo k zaroori bhi ho) I start feeling guilty.(

Same here yr, kya karain, ya to badtaneezi ho jati hai ya tasway bahane prte hain. There is no in between.

Allam Talib Johri, maybe you know him

Thank you for the compliment lekin mere farishoun ko bhi ni pta ye sahab kon hain.

Haye mjhy to pta hi ni h kuch, Ma sha Allah, tmhra mutala bhttt broad h👏

No doubt

Well elaborated but Allah Mian ki gaey ni hon yr😂

Haye mjhy to pta hi ni h kuch

Ab ac bhi bat ni ....I just read but you interpret it....that is a point which I love in your writing.

Wow! What an interesting post.
You got my attention from the first to the last word.

Epigenetics

I enjoyed this part the most, as it is something that I am not all that familiar with.

I am going to share a post with you about the tragedy that genectics is causing on my husband's side of the family.

Thank you for your kind words❤

Alistair MacLeod once said; “No one has ever said that life is to be easy. Only that it is to be lived.”

Indeed, life is not a bed of roses, it never was and never will.

I'm amazed at the strength of beautiful Nadia. She endured everything with so much grace and smiles.

Genetics can be a curse to some. It destroys the hearts of beloved ones.

And talking about you, how courageous it was to sit along her side, a real strength is when you don't give up on people in their sufferings.

May we never become disable and rely on anyone except Almighty, Ameen.

Thank you for your kind words. 🎕
Going through an ordeal like this only makes you stronger. It is amazing how you grow not only in person but also as a family.

Unfortunately, we don't know what the future holds for us, but we can just keep on praying and believing.
