Hello Everyone!

I hope you’re all doing well and having a great time. Today, I’m joining the Steemit Engagement Challenge Season 19, Week 3, hosted by The Brilliant Teacher in the Teachers & Students community. This week, we’re focusing on Educational Management, and I’m excited to share my thoughts and experiences. Let’s dive in.

Describe the case.

In our last semester, our main subject was Mobile Application Development, and we had to complete a project for our degree. The subject was assigned to a new teacher at our college. Unfortunately, just two lectures into the semester, her laptop broke down. Initially, she had planned to teach us using the laptop since it was a practical subject.

However, after her laptop broke, she started teaching us using a blackboard. Since she was unfamiliar with the subject and had not prepared proper lessons, she would watch short YouTube videos and then try to explain the material to us based on what she had seen. This method was ineffective, and we had difficulty understanding the concepts.

The teacher did not provide any structured management or clear topics. She often started new topics without proper preparation, and since the college had strict rules and we could not easily complain about teachers, we were left with inadequate instruction.

As a result, we struggled with the subject, and many of us had to join private tuition classes. I prepared for the project by learning from these classes and through YouTube videos. The teacher’s lack of proper planning and organization meant that we had no clear topic schedule, and there was no homework or practical work assigned. Instead, she would only give written tests.

The subject was heavily practical, but due to the technical issues with her laptop, our semester's learning was significantly compromised. I eventually managed to learn the subject through external sources and created an application for my project, but the lack of structured teaching severely impacted our learning experience.

Identify the managerial problems that occurred.

Planning

The teacher did not prepare any lesson plans and failed to back up any data on her laptop. As a result, course data was lost. After retrieving the data with the help of another teacher, she still had no plans or backups in place.

Organizing

There was ineffective organization of the practical work. The teacher did not create a structured plan for teaching the lessons. Instead, she relied on brief YouTube videos and provided unclear instructions. When we encountered issues, her guidance was vague, requiring us to use resources like GPT or the internet to resolve them.

Directing

The teacher struggled with guiding us effectively due to poor preparation and an unclear teaching style. Despite student complaints, no alternative teacher was assigned. The teacher reacted negatively, claiming she was trying her best to teach us.

Implementing

Due to her laptop issues, the teacher had difficulty conducting practical sessions. She demonstrated practical work on the whiteboard, which was not effective. She insisted that we use our own laptops for practical work and did not provide adequate guidance when problems arose.

Controlling

There was no effective evaluation or feedback mechanism. The teacher did not seek feedback from students and would scold us if we asked for help, suggesting we use YouTube or the internet for clarification.

Analyze the causes using the education management functions that we have known before.

Planning Issues

There was a lack of planning in the teacher's approach. She did not have any contingency plans for when her laptop broke down. Despite our college having computer labs, she did not arrange alternative resources or methods for practical demonstrations. Her lack of preparation and unfamiliarity with the subject led her to use the laptop issue as an excuse.

Organizing Issues

The teacher failed to organize both the syllabus and the practical work. There was no clear structure or plan for what topics needed to be covered. Her communication was ineffective, and she did not organize the practical sessions well. She would write down topics from YouTube on the whiteboard and instruct us to note and memorize them without proper organization or explanation.

Directing Issues

The teacher was unsuccessful in providing proper guidance. Without a thorough understanding of the topics herself, she struggled to teach us effectively. When we sought clarification, she would simply tell us to stick to the topics she had covered, without offering additional help or insights.

Implementing Issues

The teacher did not pay attention to students' practical work or progress. She failed to monitor how well we were performing the practical tasks and did not assess our understanding or capabilities. This lack of attention led to gaps in our practical knowledge and skills.

Controlling Issues

There was no focus on feedback or evaluation. Despite students repeatedly expressing their lack of understanding, the teacher responded by blaming us, insisting that we were not grasping the topics correctly. She did not provide constructive feedback or address the issues effectively.

What do you think is the right solution to the problem?

Improved Planning

To address the issues, the teacher should have implemented improved planning. She needed to have a backup plan in case her laptop failed, such as maintaining backup data and preparing alternative methods for teaching. For instance, she could have used the college’s computer labs to continue practical sessions. Instead of focusing on the laptop issue, she should have explored other options to ensure effective teaching.

Better Organization

The teacher should have developed a clear plan for teaching the practical work, including detailed instructions and a structured approach. She needed to organize the topics in a logical sequence and ensure that each topic was covered thoroughly. Additionally, she should have gathered feedback from students about her teaching methods and adjusted them based on their understanding. Clear communication and appropriate terminology tailored to students' levels would have enhanced their comprehension.

Effective Implementation

For practical work, the teacher should have utilized various tools and methods, including online platforms for additional resources. While she preferred using the whiteboard, integrating online tools and resources could have provided a more comprehensive learning experience. Guiding students to use online courses and platforms would have been beneficial.

Regular Feedback and Evaluation

The teacher should have collected regular feedback from students after each lesson to assess their understanding and address any issues. Instead of blaming students for not understanding, she should have evaluated her teaching methods and made necessary adjustments based on student feedback. Ensuring continuous improvement through regular feedback would have helped in better addressing students' needs.

Her lack of preparation and unfamiliarity with the subject led her to use the laptop issue as an excuse

This is the whole truth… because I can bet that if the lecturer laptop was good, he/she wouldn’t have delivered optimally.

Reminds me of all those lecturers that will just open their test book and just start reading it for us And claim they are teaching us..

Yes this happens with us , our education system is not maintained properly and even teachers are not performing their duties well and risks students future.
