Greetings,

* Do you have any plans for Labor Day?

The International Workers' Day is celebrated worldwide with diversity. In Africa, most countries organize on the first of May the commemoration of the struggles and gains made by workers and the social movement. Social activists and officials from institutions reflect on Labor Day the achievements and the effort require to improve the situation of workers in the different professional fields.

I am in Benin, a country located in West Africa. Labor Day in Cotonou economic center of the country is a 24h Holidays rich with events.

My plan on the past Monday was to enjoy myself in the family. Also, I went in the morning to the theater to help organize the activities for the worker's meeting event on the same day.

I was interested to meet friends at the Labor Day rally in town. However, the schedule for the day didn’t allow me to join my friends and colleague in marches. It was not too hot on the first of May. People gathered in hundreds to participate in the marches in more than seven cities all over the country. The posters held by the worker during the rally clearly demand better working conditions and Awareness of the force of child labor. I know many friends and colleagues that attend these marches to show support and connect with other workers in the community. They have reported to me in our chat productive exchanges with key actors in positions of decision.

There was also another event that I could not attend but I took the time later in the evening to watch a television report on the history of the labor movement in West Africa and sociocultural links with workers across the region with its effect on the progress made for the Labors Movement in Benin.
It was an interesting documentary full of archives on the struggles and triumphs of workers throughout the independence and recent political history.

I was happy to successfully support the workers' organization event held not too far from my residence. The volunteers were all happy to participate in the organization. We have a fun time preparing everything in detail. A tribute to all the elder Activists in the Labors Movement was the main event at the Hall. Those activists were popular due to their relentless actions to protect the rights of workers and fight for better working conditions and wages.

The crew in charge of the set up on site stayed to monitor everything during the event then proceeded to clean and put back equipment in their proper places. I was lucky to benefit from a paid holiday on May the first. My sister works at the hospital as a nurse. She only could find a colleague to replace her for a short time while she watch on social media the rally and other celebrations. Her colleague that manage to take a break during the day organized a small meeting in the lounge hall on the importance of labor and workers' rights.

I went home after the event arrangement was finished late in the afternoon. I call friends that left their work around the same time to have a small gathering with family and celebrate the contributions of our work to the betterment of society. We had fried Bananas and Beers for the adult and soft drinks for the children. It was too cold around that time to sit at the beach therefore we had our picnic in the building close to the beach. It was a nice opportunity to discuss with family and friends. Also, the occasion was appropriate to show to the young, the manner adults appreciate the value of hard work and dedication.

On a personal level, I spent the day volunteering and celebrating with family and friends. On Labor Day remembrance of the importance of workers' rights and the need to share these values with the coming generations were targets successfully completed.
