The Gate man's Encounter With Itina

Akpatta was a businessman of no mean repute. He dealt in imports and exports. His warehouse was always busy. It was quite a common sight to find lorries of various sizes loading and off-loading bags of rice, beans plastic wares, bales of second-hand clothing's, bags of flour and so on.

Just near the residential building, he had bought a large piece of land and had erected a large warehouse. The security of the establishment was not as tight as it should have been since the day the night guard was seriously reprimanded for keeping a client waiting.

The client had come to place order for some bags of rice he intended to take delivery of within a month. He had stoutly refused to open his boot as was the custom at the security post. He felt insulted when he was told to come down from his car to open his boot.

This led to an exchange of abusive words when the guard was reminded by the client that he was too old to be someone else "boy boy," he quickly retorted "I would rather work here and receive my stipend than run around with girls who are my daughter's age mates."

Mr. Itina didn't take this kindly at all for at the front seat of his car was a mere teenager of a girl he had just picked up by the roadside. The row from the two men attracted Akpatta to the scene. The gate man who was too angry to notice Akpatta's approach kept ranting at the top of his voice: "Foolish old man. Are you coming to show off your coat here? Go to University and wear it there. That is where coats are important. Foolish man. If you are that important, why don't you try wearing a mortar for a hat?"
In business, the client is always right. This was what akpatta had consistently drummed into the ears of his workers. Today, he had caught "Gate man" red-handed insulting a client. He was angry, very angry. After apologizing to Mr. Itina, he held the gate man by the collar of his shirt and dragged him to office. The others who had followed slowly knew it was time to return to their duty posts lest they incur the wrath of their master.

"Why did you insult my client?" Akpatta asked as soon as he got into his office. "The man insulted me for no reason." "Did I never teach you that the client is always right?"

When Akpatta was angry the pupils of his eyes would move quickly from left to right and from right to left. This was the second time the gate man incurred Akpatta wrath within one month. His master was in a rage today. The gate man was not given any chance to defend himself.

"Am I the chief over this establishment or am I not?" he roared. The gate man prostrated and groveled on the floor. Akpatta tried to focus his dancing eyes on the Gate man once more and warned: "Next time you fool around with a client, that day will be the end of your stay here." The warning sank home. Akpatta was not a man of many words. He was a man of action.

As the gate man left the room, he swore never to be over-zealous over the security of the warehouse again. Afterall, his effort was not appreciated.
He remembered his hey days in the Second World War when he was a terror among his peers. Sadly, his head dropped as he trudged back to his post who ever thought that after the World War the whites would dump him and leave him to grow into a broke old man?
